Yes all EJ subaru engines drive the water pump trough the cam belt, and the cam belt have to come off to replace the water pump, for good trained mechanic its about 2.5 to 3 hours work to do the cam belt and water pump.

First things first, is it actually loosing any coolant?
If not, is the guage actually telling the truth?
If its throwing coolant from the overflow reservoir with the cap on it could be (a) a head gasket is leaking, (b) the pressure cap is faulty.
If not and its just running hot look at things like the thermostat, but don't run without one. The coolant circulates too fast thro' the rad to be properly cooled. If you want to try this get a pair of side cutters and cut the middle moving part out of the thermo' and replace the ring in the housing. This will simulate the thermo' being wide open whilst restricting the flow to the designed level.
Is the rad hot all over when the guage says so? It should be well hot all along the upper half and cooler lower down?
Modern rads are mostly aluminium with plastic end cases and if the coolant is not flushed and replaced at the correct proportions even in warm climates the rad will fur up inside like a kettle. They cannot be effectively cleaned and most have a life of 6-8 years or 75-80k miles.
The key to all this is correct diagnoses of the problem before a penny is spent.
Help from someone will good skills will prevent an accidental discharge of the wallet!!

My 1997 subaru impreza squeals badly and then engine smokes

Hi this sounds weird does the smoke come out from the front engine covers? the squealing could be the cambelt trying to turn a semi or completly ceased waterpump which would cause the smoke after a while, also without the waterpump working properly the engine will leak water and anti freeze out the overflow and overheat really quickly

Do I chanage water pump when changing timing belt on 2002 lexus GS300?

Hi there,

Most Japanese designed engines have an internally mounted water pump, usually driven by the cambelt.

When we talk in terms of cam design, there are two types of engines: a) Interference and b) non-interference.

An interference egine means - if the cambelt were to break whilst engine is running, there will be major internal engine damage.
A non-interference engine means - if the cambelt were to break whilst engine is running, there will NOT be any serious internal damage to the engine.

Note: the GS300 engine (3.0L 6-cyl) is considered a Non-Interference engine.

So, one of the most critical compenents which MUST be changed, is the cambelt itself. Most manufacturers recommend changing this belt every 90,000 - 100,000km's (80,000 miles). If you have a non-interference engine, this period is not as critical, but should still be changed soon, to avoid the inconvenience of a breakdown whilst travelling.

The 2nd critical compenent is the Water Pump. The worst possible outcome of a failed waterpump, is your engine will suddenly drain of all coolant, resulting in serious overheating, causing serious internal damage to your engine.

Although there is no specified time to change the waterpump, a waterpump endures wear and tear like any component and lifespan can reduce rapidly beyond 100,000km's (80,000 mles). As the waterpump is situated next to the cambelt, it is a general rule to change out both cambelt and waterpump at the same time.

The majority of the cost to replace the cambelt, is in labor (ie opening the engine etc). If you choose to replace only one of these components, you will need to be prepared to pay for same procedure again in future, to replace the 2nd component.

Therefore, it can be more economical in the long term, to have both components changed together.

Hope this helps...

Scott

OSCILLATING NOISE FROM FRONT OF ENGINE.REMOVED BOTH BELTS,NOISE REMAINED.SOUNDS LIKE BUSHING/BEARING IS GOING/GONE.WATER PUMP? ONLY 75K ON ENGINE

This could be waterpump or one of the idler bearing guides that support the cambelt. You will need to get the cambelt covers off at the front. These are the big black plastic covers on the front of the engine.

Where is the waterpump on a 1995 Subaru Impreza and do you have to remove radiator to replace ?

The waterpump is driven by the cambelt. It is under the big black plastic cambelt cover at the front of the car. It is not absolutely essential to remove the rad but it is only 4 bolts and two hoses to get it out and it gives you alot more room to work. I would change the cambelt while I was there also to be honest. It will all have to come off again when you change the belt soo.... If you are not familiar with changing cambelts and timing it up I would let a pro do it. It is not worth the chance you might mis time it and ruin your engine.

Water leak

I would suggest putting in a new water pump. You could take the existing one off and try to seal it but for me it would make more sense to replace it since you have the old one out. They're not too expensive. Mine was $20. You'll need a tube of high temperature gasket sealer to go around the edges of the new pump. Also, make sure you use the gasket that is with the new pump. Hope this helps ya.
