I have the VGN-Z555DN VAIO laptop. I have not been able to find out how to use the "AltCar" key on the keyboard. At this point, there does not seem to be any difference between the "Alt" key and the "AltCar" key. Obviously this AltCar key is to make use of the alternate characters on the keyboard, but I cannot make it work.

Okay, I know this is an old question but when i searched for the same problem recently, it was the nearest I could find. So in case others are having the same problem:
The Vaio you have is a Canadian model, which has alternate keyboard drivers for English and French. The alt car key only works with the French keyboard (durr). To switch, press the LEFT control key and RIGHT shift key at the same time, then release. Now if you use the alt car key like the shift key, i.e. hold it down then press another key, you should be able to access the pink characters. To return to English keyboard, press left-ctrl and right-shift together again.

Press shift and control at the same time to turn on Alt Car, and the same thing to turn it off. (you need to hold the Alt Car key to get the Alt Car things you want)
Hold the power button until the computer shuts off. When you turn it back on, the alt car should be turned off.
No idea how to turn it back on though.

hey I just got my vaio z555dn last october. Its superb, but Im as much baffled about the alt car button as you are. Please let me know if you find out how it functions. Also, I have noticed my power cord's jack becoming more lose as each day passes; Im wondering if you have been unfortunate enough to be inflicted by the same problem.
