No power use this receiver as a 5.1 surround and with two additional speakers in zone 2 in another room. Had the zone 2s cranked up too loud and the protection circuitry activated (has done this several times). Problem is, when I turn power back on, I have no way to turn the volume down except with the remote (because it is zone 2...volume dial doesn't work for zone 2). At any rate, powered back up and the receiver immediately shut down again (this has happened before) as I tried to adjust the volume.... Powered up one more time and got the volume down so the protection wouldn't activate....30 minutes later and after continual play, power went off again. When i tried to power up, there was a sharp crack and now won't power up...even after unplugging, waiting, etc.

It is a nice gift! Specs state

also, you might have to search through the menu of the receiver, and set the surround back speakers to be zone 2 instead of using the 7.1 configuration that is probably default.

i think zone 2 will only play sources that are hooked up with analog connects, ie. red/white cables. try using the radio to see if it works. you might have to hook up your cable/sat box, cd player, dvd player, whatever you have that you want to listen to with both digital and analog cables to get everything to work right.

I had the same questions and still can't believe there isn't more information on the topic. It's crazy how much marketing Denon devotes to their Multi-Zone features yet offers very little reference materials on the actual set up. I guess most customers don't use the fearture? Here you go:

-The Multi-Zone on the Denon 4802 is analog only. If you are running digital coax or fiber you will have to run a second line that's analog (eg RCA red/white) from the source to the Denon in order for the signal to to make it to the Zone 2 speakers (regardless if it's Pre-Amp out or direct connect to the Zone 2 speakers from the multi/SB speaker outs. Regarding the Harmony question, I had the same problem with my Harmony 880 and wasn't able to find an answer after multiple searches. Luckily I figured it out when I deleted the receiver from the Logitec device list and started over. Connect the remote to your computer, launch the Logitec Harmony Remote Software, click the Devices tab, hit the Add Device, pick the device type & manufacturer from the drop down list, enter "AVR-4802" under Model and finally hit the Next button in the lower right corner of the UI. The next page solves the Harmony Zone 2 control problem. You will see a message "To use your device in additional zones/rooms, click the checkbox...." Make sure Room 2 is checked (mine was not), update the remote and you're done. The Harmony Device menu you will now contain a second receiver icon called "receiver 2." Hit "device" on the Harmony, choose "receiver 2" and you will gain control over Zone 2 including volume.

Hello, the setting must be "Not Activated" That is for zone 2 setup. If you are setting up 5 speakers the rear speakers should be connected to surround not surround back. Thank you Onkyo USA.

I know this is old and im sure you have it solved by now, but it might be a good idea to check the amp setting of Zone 2. Is it switched to Internal or external? I remember something strange about this amp in that when you change from using the rear surrounds and go to use them in Zone 2, it resets the amp setting or something like that. Hope it helps if you still need it.

When you turn on zone 2 you are in stereo mode. The center speaker and the rear speakers will not function in stereo mode.

Try turning on zone 2 and then switch the surround mode after that and see if it helps. If it turns the zone 2 speakers off when you do that, then your unit does not support what you want it to do. Center speakers only work in listening modes other than stereo.

Most A/V receivers are designed for watching movies and they did not take this use into consideration because zone 2 would normally be in another room such as the way you have yours set up. If somebody is watching a movie in one room they would not need to hear it in another room. You would think that the designers, who are very talented to be able to come up with these type of units, would have just a little more imagination on how people would be using the equipment. Go figure!

If your receiver has a 5 or 7 channel stereo mode, it may work then. You can try, but I don't think it will help.

I have even seen some receivers that have the center channel amp being used for the zone 2 output as well. It just switches what speaker output jacks it goes to with a couple of relays which makes it impossible to use the center and zone 2 at the same time.

I guess they are just being cheap by not putting another output channel in the unit and sharing the one they have.

Why would anybody want to use the center and the zone 2 at the same time???? Sad, isn't it.

Hard to believe that such a nice receiver would have such a rediculous limit designed right into it. But they really do design them like that.

yes you can enjoy of multi zone function which allow you to listen in two different places at same time.(main room& sub room).

OK, From what I am understanding is that you both are trying to uilize a digital audio source (HDMI cables are digital audio only) and hence this is the problem. You can only use an analog audio source (connection) to utilize the audio output to zone 2. A simple soultion is to use the analog audio in conjuction with the digital. Connect the digital (HDMI, Optical, Coax) to the main zone and the left and right audios to zone 2.
