How do i change the G1 battery

No. The coin battery only powers the memory for the camera settings such as date & time. I suspect you have a chip failure and will need to send the camera off for repair. I know, I know,.... these repair places are a rip-off because they quote a flat rate for repair, even if it's a $3.00 chip set.

The battery needs to be revived when it is completely drained or when it is dead because the phone will not be able to charge it. For instructions on how to revive battery, check it here.

This was copied from a site on the web. I personally have used the instructions below and it worked for restoring my G1. Once it is restored, you may want to try to run the update again.

1. Turn the G1 off. If it’s frozen on, take the battery out and put it back in the unit.

2. Hold the Home and Power keys down at same time for about 25 seconds. You will see a yellow triangle screen with exclamation point in the middle.
Now to wipe the device clean:

3. Press Alt+L.

4. Press Alt+W for a factory reset.

5. Press the Home and Back keys again for about 25 seconds.

The phone should reset again and the hard reset is complete.

if none of these suggestions work your phone is defective...hold the power button longer to turn it on. if not that your battery is dead. if your phone isnt charging up, your battery charger is defective. if you know someone with a usb charger, you can try theirs

Just bought a G1 earlier this week and had same issue this morning, freaked out (I did just get it) and proceeded to call T-Mobile support.

I was told that this is a known defect in the phone and that the only remedy is to remove the battery as you have been doing and put it back.

I know it's probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but, for all the great things this device is capable of, it's a small price to pay.

remove the battery, put in the battery, turn on device. There is a tab to remove the back cover of the device and get at the battery, With the keyboard open it is on the left near the edge of the device. push down.

The only way to get the unlock code is to have T-mobile service for at least 90 days(unless you're lucky). Call the service help line and tell them that you are going over seas and would like the unlock code for your G1. They will need your account info as well as the IMEI number of your phone(this can be found under the battery on the phone). In roughly 24hrs. you will receive an e-mail from HTC with your phone's SPECIFIC code(codes don't work for other G1s).


HOW TO:

1. Turn off the phone and remove battery/SIM

2. Insert other carrier's SIM and replace battery/cover

3. Power up phone and enter unlock code in menu that comes up.

4. Enjoy your unlocked G1

You need to be set up for the G1 data plan through T-Mobile. This is the 24.99 plan for g1 data + 400 texts, or 34.99 for g1 data and unlimited texts. If you are setup through online billing, you can do this through the website by clicking "Account>Add/Change services". If you do not have web billing, you can contact billing by phone.

Note - it can take up to 24 hours to become active, but on mine, it only took 10 minutes.
