I have a Briggs and Stratton 7KW standby generator. I accidentally spilled some oil on it during a hurricane and cleaned it. However, when I try to start it, it will go on for about 15 seconds and then shut down.

Sounds more like a fuel problem not oil being spilled on it but check the oil level some have a low oil shut off see if you can keep it running spraying carb cleaner in the air filter that will tell you if it is a fuel problem more so a fuel problem if you left fuel in it for more than 30 days

SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton Burnt Brushes

I did find out that the inner slip ring was worn down. Still unknown why and the repair tech we took it to twice just replaced the brushes and never looked at the slip rings.

My solution, which has worked for over two months now (knock on wood) is as follows:

The slip ring on this unit can only be replaced by replacing the whole rotor assembly. I looked at the width of the brushes and the width of slip rings. The slip rings are twice as big as a brush. The solution was to move the brushes outward by one brush length. In order to do that, I had to turn the brush assembly around because of the extra plastic on the unit and space it out one brush length. Note: Still hook the wires as if the brush assembly was not turned around.

I used an old brush assembly and cut the two areas where the screws go through to make my spacers and it works perfectly.

SOURCE: black max 7kw generator high voltage output

Those voltage readings MAY be normal.

The AC waveform may cause your meter to read inaccurately. You would need to use a TRUE RMS meter to accurately read the voltage.

The siple meters actually read the AVERAGE voltage and then are calibrated to mulltiply it by the "form factor" for a sine wave. OFTEN these generators don't produce a clean sine wave. A square-ish wave will read higher on the garden variety meters.

Compare the brightness of a lamp comparing to when run on your utility.

The frequency depends on engine speed ... yours is running a bit fast...check it under at least half load and if off, adjust the govenor slightly.

SOURCE: I have a Briggs & Stratton Generator 5550Watt model 030253 That is showing an output of only 4.6 V

Have the same generator. Shows only 3 Volts. I took the generator apart and found that the stator winding was burned. Can buy a replacement stator for about $250.00.

Briggs and Stratton 7KW House Generator can not start. Model 01897

You may be experiencing the major short fall in CNG & propane systems. The gas regulator. They are unforgiving. If used every day they stay clear and last forever. But intermittent use allows moisture to form & oxidize internal components. Valves & diaphragm start to malfunction and then the safety design of the regulator prevents it from working unless all is well. I'd be willing to bet this is your problem. Good luck.

My generator is a briggs and stratton 7kw prowered. connected to full propane tanks. i have not had any problems with the generator until this past weekend. the generator starts up fine, and then once...

You have a fuel delivery issue that can be dealt with by cleaning carb or replacing it. If you do replace carb has to be adjusted to the motor.(idle, mixture)

Briggs and Stratton propane gernerator will not run.

The engine is starved for fuel. Check fuel flow. Possibly a dirty fuel filter someplace in the line or the regulator has low flow.

You can verify this by putting an UNLIGHTED Bernz propane torch into the intake. If that improves it, then low fuel flow is the culprit.

Fuel filters for propane are very fine and can plug up easily. I am not sure where yours are, however I would check at the inout of the regulator for one there for sure.
