I can only comment generically:
I would try to uninstall the drive on the OS. Then re-start the computer. After the re-start, connect the drive and see if the drive re-installs itself.
If the error persists, then the drive is indicating failure. To absolutely verify if it has failed, take the drive to a store where there are MAC computers and try the drive on one of their computers to see if it works.
A continuous flashing LED on most devices where the LED does not normally continuously flash is an indication of a failure of the device. Some devices will flash an error code when designed to do so, and if possible.

Testimonial: "thanks. its a device failure. I had connected it through keyboard usb port, and it seems that the power was not flowing properly to run external memory. "
NOOOOO don't do that-
First check and see USB is functional and to what extent-
This can be done in you "about this Mac" under the USB menu, it will show you exactly how the comp see the disk- if it's see fragment Data, the hierarchy etc... If it sees nothing, you need to isolate what is failing, the USB input or the device. So plug it in the other USB port and see if that fixes it. What you're describing sounds most like electric issues, not data issues- if stumped, replace the USB cable and see if that fixes ir
You can always open your Disk Utility for extra help, if you find you can't get it running place the disk in a feeezer bag and put in your freezer for 24 hours. Get a new cording system and be prepared to get a couple hours tops to pull your data off. This is an old IT trick that works like a gangster!!!! Remember when you face an issue- those of us in IT use "troubleshooting theory" to knock out the easy options first!
Hope that helps

You need to determine whether the problem is at the disk interface or at the computer interface. Will the drive mount on ANOTHER machine using FireWire? Will your computer mount ANOTHER device using FireWire? This will tell you which machine is at fault. It's not unheard of for the FireWire channels in a Mac to just go bad, and (unless it is a Mac Pro) it typically requires a logic board replacement to address. For a G5, this would not be cost-effective. On the other hand, as I say, it could just be a bad interface in the drive itself. It's up to you to determine which it is.
