HDMI output not working?

I bought a RX-V663 on CL, and the HDMI output does not seem to be working. I've played with just about every setting possible. When I pull up the menu, and look at the inputs, it says 1080i as the incoming signal, however no picture will show up on the screen through HDMI. The other types of outputs work fine though.

SOURCE: Yamaha RX-V663 Not Providing 1080 Signal

First let me say that you have stated your problem very well. I completely understand the issue you are having.

I have been repairing a/v systems since they started selling them.

By your description of your problem, it is obvious that you have isolated the problem to the Yamaha.

Despite what Yamaha tech support say's, it is their problem.

I have been dealing with tech support for a lot of different manufacters for many, many years. I repair under warranty over 20 different brands, but not Yamaha. I have repaired plenty of Yamaha receivers but none with this particular problem.

It is not uncommon to find tech support people who don't know as much as they should about their own product.

Since I don't have the instruction manual or a service manual forthis model I can only be of minimal help.

What you can do, if you have your instruction manual, check it over closely for this subject on how to change the settings for the HDMI. If you can not find this particular issue, it is possible that the Yamaha doesn't support 1080i. I would be surprised if it did not, but stranger things have happened.

Another thing you can do if you can still not find an answer to this problem is to take it in to an authorized Yamaha service center.

If you have recently purchased this Yamaha, it will be under warranty. They get at least 1 year. Tell them the problem you are having and if they do not know how to solve it right there on the spot, or give you an answer that satisfies you, leave it with them
to have it fixed. If they are an authorized service center they will have to fix it or get it replaced for you if it is under warranty. It may need a firmware upgrade to the digital board. If that is the problem, then they can do it for you.

Let me know if you need any more help.
Sorry I wasn't more help, but an authorized service center may be your best bet.

SOURCE: Yamaha RX-V663 - HDMI doesn't work.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a workaround:

  • as you posted, audio out of the DVD goes to the receiver;
  • HDMI out of the DVD goes to the Schaub Lorenz LCD.
Even if it were a compatibility issue or HDMI processor issue on the receiver, the above should get you going.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

SOURCE: Verizon Fios connection issue with RX-V663 Receiver

I had the same problem with RXV3900, was told by verizon and yamaha it's a software issue with the box. Verizon is suppose to be working on a new update, but no time frame for now. I'm using component to receiver, and hdmi to tv with no issues.

SOURCE: Unable to play DTS-HD & True-HD

What do you hear? Do all other modes work ok?

If Audio Select (Page 44 and 98) is set to HDMI you will hear silence if no HDMI signal is present. I think AUTO is the best choice here.

-------

On Page 98 of the manual it says a bunch of things concerning automatic signal detection and input selection.

Initial configuration D) INIT. CONFIG
Use this feature to select the settings of the audio input jack select, active decoders and extended surround when you tum on this unit.
....

Audio select AUDIO SELECT
Use this feature to designate the default audio input jack select setting (see page 44) for the input sources connected to the DIGITAL INPUT jacks when you tum on the power of this unit.

HDMI set E)HDMI SET
Use this feature to select the component to play back HDMI audio signals.

Support audio S. Audio
Use this feature to select whether to play back HDMI audio signals on this unit or on another HDMI component connected to the HDMI OUT jack on the rear panel of this unit.
...

CHOICE = RX-V663

FUNCTION
Plays back HDMI audio signals on this unit. The HDMI audio signals input at the HDMI input jacks of this unit are not output to the HDMI component connected to the HDMI OUT jack on the rear panel of this unit.

CHOICE = OTHER
HDMI component connected to the HDMI OUT jack.

NOTES
This unit transmits audio and video signals input at the HDMI input jacks to the HDMI out jack only when this unit is turned on even if "S.AUDIO" is set to "OTHER".

I'd look in these areas for specific guidance.

SOURCE: Yamaha RX V 657 - No Sound Output, and No input detection

Bad DSP chip. The only other possibility is if you have the "Direct" on. On the front of the receiver it's a small button. Also make sure your "Speaker Select" A/B is "on" You will see it on the display, it's also a small button on the front of the receiver. If all this is correct and you still have no audio, it's a bad DSP chip. Not worth repair, it's 400-500 repair. Not very common in a Yamaha RX-V series, but I have seen it. I'm a Yamaha Dealer. If you need further help, post a comment and I will be glad to help you further.

Yamaha rx-v663 is there a firmware update to get hdmi 1.4a support ?

Unfortunatly there is not any firmware to upgrade your unit to a higher HDMI format. There is a firmware though that corrects the following symptoms.

1. In case of playback of some DTS-HD Master Audio stream, pop noise may be generated.
2. Test tone may not be output under specific YPAO condition.
3. When test tone is output from presence channel, surround R channel is simultaneously output when speaker settings are PRESENCE SP "EXIST" and SWFR "NONE".
4. Multi channel input setting will be reset after power off the unit, in case of setting "INPUT CH" to "8CH" and "FRONT" to "VCR" or "V-AUX".

Cannot get my yamaha rx-v663 to decode DolbyTrueHD audio of get my SBL/SBR speakers to work without turning the bi-amp on.

You should always connect with HDMI when using and decoding HD sound formats. If you use the normal digital option it will use PCM. Also check if your source is set to HD formats via HDMI connections.

Audio but no video from Sony Blu-Ray w/ HDMI hookup to RX-V663

Okay...my first contribution to any forum but I have the same problem (Yamaha RX-V663 and Samsung Blu Ray) and found the solution. The problem is you probably have your HDMI cables from your DVD player and reciever connected to a DVI input on your TV. The DVI may have problems communicating--not HDCP compliant. My system was working great then I hit a button on my remote...just playing around. I think it was the pure audio and I turned off the receiver. After that, the audio worked but there was no video. After many frustrating hours, the fix was to unplug the HDMI and DVI cable then turn the power off, cycle the power again, and plug the HDMI and DVI cables back in (the DVI was the last cable plugged in, not sure if that matters). By unplugging everthing you've reset the communication between the HDMI components and the DVI TV.

See page 18 of the yamaha owners manual, second to last note on bottom right of the page. It says there may be a problem...

I also noticed that the yamaha reciever was sending 1080p (my older tv is 1080I) and that is why the video wouldn't display on the TV. You can see this in the video signal info screen, unfortunately there is no setting to switch it back, just recycle the cables and power and it should reset.

Uncredibly frustrating but I got my picture back!
