Try useing your graphics card's control panel you can find it via the windows control panel. if you have not installed your Graphics card's driver software goto the company who made the card and download the latest driver. then once the driver is installed goto windows control panel and click on the driver's control panel. Then goto desktop color corection and move the brightness slider to the right until it's bright enough.

My Laptop 6400 screen is very dark, how do lighten? I have replaced battery twice in last 3 1/2 yrs.

ldriscoll3:
The brightness of the screen does not generally depend on the health of the battery.

On the keyboard of your laptop is a "Fn" key. You need to press and hold the key down while you also press the "Up Arrow" key repeatedly. Each time you press the "Up Arrow" key while holding the "Fn" key down, the display will get progressively brighter until you reach maximum brightness. If you go too far and it gets too bright (not likely), just press the "Down Arrow" key while holding the "FN" key down until it's the perfect brightness

This is explained on page 33 of the user manual that you can download from here:

Inspiron 6400 powers up but screen basically dark and barely able to see the desktop. using the FN key and the up arrow does not change the contrast. any thoughts?

Your backlight bulb went out, it's a long tube on the bottom typically, It's most likely taped to the LCD frame and encassed in a metal shield. Not for the faint of heart taking on the repair. Light fixtures are found on eBay however, or new LCDs of course

My laptop is very dark and holding fn and the sun

The Back-light on your LCD screen is bad, your crystals aren't illuminating, so it is dark.... very dark.

You need a new LCD screen.

Sorry.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is extremely dark. +brightness does nothing

Hi there.
Yes, if you can see a very faint image on the screen that indicates that the inverter or inverter coil has become defective and needs looking at or replacing.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!
