the switch or motor is wired incorrectly. These parts are polarity sensitive. The smoking I would assume is from the old switch and now the rotation is reversed. Let me know if you need more assistance.
The motor has jammed and burned out. It is probably not worth trying to repair.
If it is still within the warranty period take it back for replacement under guarantee
Happens on new Hitachi drills for some reason during the break in period. If you still get the smoke and problems, then take it back to the store for exchange if your within 30 days warranty. Call Hitachi and have them deal with it if your within your 1 year warranty.
whas the drill stuck? if so you will need to open it and see if the coal is intact, if not change them and it should work just fine, if not try to clean the motor
Re: Burned trigger switch: call the number on the drill (800.590.3723) and tell them what happened. They will offer to send you a new switch or have you send the drill in for replacement of the switch--although the person I talked with said they would probably just replace the whole drill.
Usualy when a drill is put under extreme load the windings get hot on the armature. Sometimes the coating on the windings melts off and short together. the drill is on its last leg when this happens
