On an old E class like this you will find the most common cause is simply the gasket under the cap has cracked or perished. As long as you are hearing at least three clicks when you put it back on you have it down enough and it should seal properlly. You should not be able to feel any cracks or rough areas and the gasket should be soft. You should also check the mating surface for any damage or debris. It should be smooth to the touch. You can replace the cap and gasket quite cheaply. If not the cap then you will have to start looking at hoses and connectors.
There is a pressure relief hose that comes from the fuel tank and ends near the fuel filler nozzle. there may be a loose connection there, it would cause the same error code
