Replacing the spring on a Muir VFF 600 windlass can be a relatively simple process if you have the proper tools and experience working with mechanical equipment. Here are some general steps to follow:
Turn off the power to the windlass at the circuit breaker or disconnect the battery.
Remove the motor cover from the windlass to access the spring and chain.
Disconnect the chain from the gypsy and remove it from the windlass.
Locate the tensioning bolt and use a wrench to loosen it. This will release tension on the spring.
Use a pair of pliers or a spring tool to remove the retaining clip that holds the spring in place.
Remove the old spring from the windlass and replace it with the new one.
Reinsert the retaining clip to hold the new spring in place.
Use a wrench to tighten the tensioning bolt and apply tension to the new spring.
Reattach the chain to the gypsy and test the windlass to ensure it is working properly.
Replace the motor cover and turn the power back on.
It is important to note that if you are not familiar with the windlass or do not feel comfortable performing these steps, it is best to have a professional do the work.
Theres an 8mm nut holding it onto the pin that goes thru the frame.
Take that nut off and remove the tensioner. Put some grease on the new pin where the tensioner goes. Put the end of the new spring into the hole in the frame next to the pin hole. Hold the tensioner in place and put the pin thru and the nut back on. You should be able to get the chain back on the sprocket without loosening the axle nuts. Hope this helps.
I had this same problem and it took me a while to figure it out and there is nothing in the manual that helps. It comes down to this, both parts of the chain, top and bottom, go above the tensioner.
Its not meant to be removed. Purchase a new one and save yourself some troubles. You need special tools to remove it. I highly recommend purchasing the wheel complete.
You have a self adjusting cam chain tensioner. It is sold as an assembly. Take out the complete unit and replace it with a new one. The springs are not bad , the device that keeps the pressure on the tensioner is slipping causing a ticking sound.
First your going to remove the deck. Take off the chain tensioner Next remove the motor and put the chain around the gear Put the motor back on the scooter with the chain on Then take the rear wheel off and put the chain into the gear. Put the rear wheel back on along with the chain tensioner and deck Your done!
Note: the reason why I say you have the remove the motor and wheel is the get the chain on. So you may only have to partial remove the motor or tires to get the chain on.
If the chain is too long than shorten it by using a chain breaker. Or you don't have a chain breaker take the scooter to a bike or more preferable a electric scooter shop and have them do it. The problem could also be your chain tensioner check to see if it's tightening the chain.
Yes, it is possible that the spring needs to be pre-tensioned. its also possible that something was put together a little out of alignment, or some part is too tight and its too hard for the spring to wind in the chord. try to reassemble the chainsaw with a couple more turns on the spring and see if that helps.
