Suddenly unable to transfer photos into Nikon Picture Perfect

Help! All of a sudden, I am unable to transfer photos from my Nikon D40x into the Nikon Picture Perfect software. It detects my memory card, but none of the photos on it. I've never had this problem before. What can I do?

Thanks so much for your reply with embedded links. For some reason, I tried it again a day or two later, and the transfer worked fine, just as it has each time before. Very weird, but I'm thankful it worked! I'm not sure the cable was the problem, b/c I could go to My Computer and then find the camera and see the photos that way; I just couldn't get them to transfer into Picture Project (the Nikon photo editing software), and really wanted them there so I could edit them. At any rate, it works now, thankfully, but thanks for the tip about the card reader. I'll look into purchasing one of those to use instead. Thanks again!

How are you transferring the photos? Are you using a cable, or a card reader? If you are using a cable then most likely the cable went bad. I have a D-1 and a D-2, and I never use the firewire cable. I put the CF cards into a card reader. If you are not using a card reader then try that. You can get a decent one from E-Film or from most any computer store.

One more step to try, did you format the card in the camera when you first loaded the card in? On my cameras you need to format that card to have them work with the camera.

A Card reader is a really good option. My firewire for my D-1 went bad after a year and rather than spend the $90.00 to replace it, I just bought an E-Film reader for $22.00

Did you accedentely rotate the mode dail? because as soon as your not in one of the manual modes, you are not able to decide what goes on. In auto (green camera logo) the camera does his own way.

Nikon d40x suddenly stopped working- won't turn on- was working fine and when I connected it to laptop to download, it turned on , then suddenly went blank.

Do you get the 'push shutter button again' or 'turn off and on again ' message? If so the motor in the SQ unit that charges the shutter and moves the mirror up and down has failed. A very very common problem. The part is on constant back order at Nikon, and good luck getting it anyway as Nikon is going to stop selling parts to anyone in just a few weeks.

Suddenly my photos are not getting transferred to the computer. I am using the cord to transfer. It worked the first two times but now it won't. Thoughts?

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

Seems possible that the servo control /main processor control is faulty and will need help from Nikon service , It will be better to get a evaluation for the fault and so we can have a consenses on the fault.

Connected Nikon L11 to Vista laptop. Picture Project software NOT installed. Turned on camera in hope Adobe Bridge could be used to transfer photos to laptop. Nothing happened and suddenly something...

Get a card reader. Use it from now on to transfer your pictures to the computer. Remove the card and battery from the camera...press all the buttons...leave it alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.

in Vista Nikon Picture Perfect is not a requirement Any photo software will do. I remove my chip and insert it into my printer to upload photos manually as though it were a hard-drive i used to use the firewire and leave the chip in my Nikon d70s and let windows or the photo software of your choice offer to upload the photos for me. Try Picasa or ACDSee Photo Manager and ACDSee Pro peer to peer sites or torrents share these with cracks/serials for you to explore Picasa is free online

Automatic focus not working

The D40x only autofocuses with the latest AF-S (and old professional AF-I) lenses. Most traditional (screw-type) AF lenses from 1986 through today will not autofocus on the D40x. If your lens says "AF-S," you're fine.
Most lenses sold today for the D40x are AF-S, and so is the included 18-55mm kit lens. Many non-Nikon lenses from Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray, Sigma and anyone other than Nikon still won't autofocus on the D40x. Try before you buy, but honestly, there isn't much the included 18-55mm lens won't do.
Autofocus systems are fast, but not usually instantaneous. You have to hold the shutter down halfway as you compose the first shot so the AF system can focus and lock, and then the camera fires instantaneously when you press the shutter the rest of the way. See Preventing Shutter Delay for more.

Nikon d40x LCD screen stopped working

Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off 'Review' in the settings menu, the screen doesn't show anything after you take a picture. If the screen doesn't come on when you push the 'Menu' button with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be repaired.
