There are two types of foot pedals you should be aware of: articulating and non-articulating pedals. Non-articulating pedals are less desirable due to the fact that the ball of your feet absorb most of the pressure, which will often lead to numbness in your feet. You should look for a machine with articulating pedals. They allow your feet to remain flat, distributing pressure throughout your entire foot as opposed to one part of the foot.

Hello there. Unfortunatley there is no way other than removing the crank arms. You do need to remove the nut on the axle and you will need a crank puller. The puller is available at any local bicycle shop for around 10-15 dollars.

Fitness Quest Eclipse 1175e Elliptical Trainers were recalled on December 11, 2007 for a fall hazard. During exercise, the foot pedal crank can break. After receiving 190 reports of the crank breaking, the company is offering a replacement product or credit toward other Fitness Quest products. If the pedal falls off, be sure to save it; you will need the right foot platform to claim the replacement or credit.
Owners should stop using the elliptical trainer immediately. Owners can receive a replacement with another Fitness Quest product or credit.

E1 errors are usually lubrication/resistance issues. Has the unit been oiled/greased recently?
