When you lift the scanner lid look to the left bottom. you should see a green slider button. If you stick your hand in the output tray and get it rigth under the green slider you will find a lever. Move that thing backwards or forwards, that is your unlocker.

I had exact same issue, could not scan in any size larger than Letter; changed Scan Default settings for paper size but made no difference. Based on dmf1984's suggestion I did same: went to Start -> Dell -> Dell Printers -> Dell Laser 1815dn -> Network Scan and changed Scan Paper size to Legal hit apply then tried scan again... problem solved

When you save the scan select pdf from the pull down menu "Select Type of Document" in the Save Dialog.

Your software driver installed incomplete, need to reinstall again.disconnect first the USB printer cable, then install the software driver if installation instruction on screen connect your USB cable follow the instruction.
If same problem, try to download printer software driver to this link http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=PRN_ALL_1815DN&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=
then select your present operating system to get software driver compatible.

My laser mfp 1815dn is reducing the size of the image of the document i am scanning. how do i get it back to scan and save a full page?

Adjust the Scan setting to the defalult/appropriate resolution. See guidelines below.

Documents:

300 dpi black-and-white or 200 dpi grayscale or color

Documents of poor quality or that contain small text:

400 dpi black-and-white or 300 dpi grayscale

Photographs and pictures:

100-200 dpi color or 200 dpi grayscale

My Dell 1815dn printer - says the scanner is locked. Makes horrible clicking sound when I try to scan of make a copy. How do I unlock the scanner?

The scanner has a manual lock (a blue sliding switch on the base of the scan bed inside of the printing output slot.)
This prevents the scan head from damage when the printer is moved.

Look and reach inside the paper outlet and pull the latch (located on the left) towards you.
