Might be the tub bearing going out. Is she leaking any? Here is a visual inspect and repair of the tub seal: I used a pipe wrench to unscrew this top portion of the seal (lefty loosey)
Those 6 springs are pretty tough to get back on there without the special tool other than that it all goes back pretty easy. Service manual and more HERE
My Maytag Performa makes a grinding sound when it agitates. When it starts to dump the water it makes a loud grinding on metal sound... really loud. What is the problem and how much to fix?
If it is making a sound like a loud rumbling sound similar to a jet plane taking off, it probally due to the seal has failed causing water to leak into the bearings. The bearings begin to rust, and no longer round and the noise gets progressively louder. It can be rather expensive to fix. Get a few estimates before deciding whether it is worth fixing.
It appears Maytag no longer produces the type of quality product we have purchased since 1970... we've owned three Maytag Washers - our last "performa" is a piece of ****!
Yes it could be the spin bearing at the base on top of the brake assembly. I would suspect that the brake assembly is the cause of the noise as this engaged when you the washer agitates. If it was the bearing it would make a loud noise in the spin cycle, too.
i dont have a model number ..just tip unit prop it up try and spin unit with belt on with your hand ,,than take belt off and spin pump pully..by itself...onthejob
This washer is JUNK!!!!!! We have the same washer (2 1/2 years old) and same problem. Tried to replace the bearing myself, no luck. So I called a repair man to come out and look at it. As soon as i told him the model number, they would'nt even come out. Very common problem for this washer. We are on our way to Sears to purchase a Kenmore.....GOOD LUCK
