No picture after not using my ZR80 for over a year now, I can not see anything through the lens. Everything is clean and seems to be working fine except it doesn't show me what i'm looking at or display anything on the screen. If i hit record it records sound and black as the video. What could be causing this?

I am having the same problem with my ZR80. When I record I don't see a picture in the screen and it records black. please help me fix this problem. I've tried playing with the menu buttons, but I haven't gotten any results.

  • rjberkey Dec 20, 2007

Same problem...audio only, no video. Worked fine earlier in the summer and then the black screen and nothing in the viewfinder this Fall.

Previously recorded video plays back just fine - both on the camera as well as when connected to the tv.

Canon is taking a look at ours free of charge but told my wife over the phone that it did not sound like this was the CCD sensor (because we could play back older video ok?)...I am not convinced and this forum tells me this is a common defect that Canon hopefully will accept responsibility for.

  • jaymulford Dec 26, 2007

Great little camcorder and I love Canon products, but disappointed... The unit seems to function properly. In playback mode, video and audio playback works just fine. In camera mode, image finder and LCD display both operate and show status messages (e.g., battery, mode, date, etc.), but, no image is displayed. Record seems to work, but only records audio, no video.

I am having the same problem with my Canon ZR80, i called the 800-828-4040 number and, a representative explained to me that this is happening to all the Canon ZR80 it is a defective chip. They have all gone down. They told me to send it in and they will be taking care of the problem at no cost, as long as the camera has not been damaged or dropped. Make sure to remove your Batt, and and tape in the camera before you send it back.

I''d spend the entire morning looking for a camcorder repair place near me, until I stumbled upon this post. My fault for not searching for my model first. I have the EXACT same problem, and thought I somehow damaged on a plane ride. Obviously that's not the case. I'll be shipping mine back tout suite. Thanks!

  • DanimalMN Jun 17, 2008

Wholly **** thanks for all of these good posts! I was having this same problem after not using it for 6 months. Standard repair was $150.00 and I was thinking of just getting a new camcorder instead of repairing it.

I then did a little research and found this awesome site. Called the 800 # suggested below and they are going to fix it for free!

Thanks for posting the 800# and having the tech number available for us searchers.

In the first half of October, 2005, a number of digital camera and camcorder manufacturers issued service advisories involving a range of digital camera models (as well as some digital camcorders and PDAs that incorporate image sensors). In each case, the story was similar - CCD (image sensor) failures, particularly in conditions of high heat and humidity, led to cameras capturing images with either no picture at all, or with extreme distortion and severe purple or green color casts. An example of the latter symptom, courtesy of the Konica Minolta Europe website, can be seen further down this page. We first started hearing about this problem in late September and early October, 2005, with a significant increase in reader emails about it in the first week of October. The problem understandably caused considerable concern among our readers, with many wondering whether this was an ongoing problem that could affect current cameras. Initial service advisories by Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Konica Minolta were soon followed by announcements by Nikon, Ricoh, and Olympus. Affected cameras were all manufactured between 2002 and 2004, the underlying problems have apparently been found and corrected, so no cameras currently on the market are affected. (We are assured by sources that new cameras purchased today will not be affected by this problem. See the "What caused this problem" section at the bottom of this document, for a more detailed discussion of possible causes.) We here at Imaging Resource did a little digging into the problem, and it appears that the problems trace to certain models of image sensor chips manufactured by Sony between 2002 and 2004. (Fujifilm has stated that they manufacture their own CCD chips, so it's not clear whether or not the problems with their cameras are in fact related to those of the other makers.) The problem can take any of several forms, but all involve severe color shifts and/or severe distortions of the image. The images below show two examples (courtesy of Konica Minolta) of what the problem might look like, if your camera falls prey to it. In the early stages of the problem, the camera may still capture recognizable images, but with a washed-out appearance and a strong magenta or green tint What products may be affected? Quite a number of products may develop this problem, including digital cameras, camcorders, and even PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) that incorporate an image sensor. The following is a list of affected models by various manufacturers that we are presently aware of. We will update this list as new information becomes available. We recommend that you check the site regularly for this and other breaking news. Here are lists of the affected products, grouped by manufacturer: Canon Digital Cameras Camcorders PowerShot A60 PowerShot A70 PowerShot A75 PowerShot A300 PowerShot A310 PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH / Digital IXUS V3 / IXY D320 PowerShot SD100 Digital ELPH / Digital IXUS II / IXY Digital 30 PowerShot SD110 Digital ELPH / Digital IXUS IIs / IXY Digital 30a Additional digital cameras added in the fall of 2006 to the original service advisory by Canon include the following, all of which went on sale starting from 2002 to 2004, depending on the specific model: PowerShot A40 PowerShot A80 PowerShot A85 PowerShot A95 PowerShot S1 IS PowerShot S60 PowerShot S200 DIGITAL ELPH / DIGITAL IXUS V2 / IXY DIGITAL 200a PowerShot S330 DIGITAL ELPH / DIGITAL IXUS 330 / IXY DIGITAL 300a PowerShot S400 DIGITAL ELPH / DIGITAL IXUS 400 / IXY DIGITAL 400 PowerShot S410 DIGITAL ELPH / DIGITAL IXUS 430 / IXY DIGITAL 450 PowerShot S500 DIGITAL ELPH / DIGITAL IXUS 500 / IXY DIGITAL 500 (including White Limited version) MV600i MV630i MV650i MV700i MV730i MV750i MV5i MV5i MC MV6i MC ZR60 ZR65 MC ZR70 MC ZR80 ZR85 ZR90 Elura 40 MC Elura 50 According to the updated advisory, available on the company's US website (as well as other regional Canon websites), the additional eleven digital camera models shown above in red may now be eligible for free service regardless of warranty status, should any malfunction be caused by the CCD sensor. For repair instructions, visit the Canon USA support website. To read the specific service advisory for your model, use the pulldown menus to browse for your specific model, or simply type the model number into the box provided at the bottom of the page and click the "Search" button. The Canon support website holds no forms or other needed documents, so you can save yourself some time (if you live in the US or Puerto Rico) by just calling the Canon Customer Support line at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday-Friday 8am to 12 midnight, and Saturday from 10am-8pm. (All times EST.) Alternately, you can send email to: [email protected].

I called Canon Support on 11-02-12 about the black screen chip failure and spoke to one of their Support Reps. His reply was simply Canon no longer supports this model ZR80 and he turned me over to a Canon Loyalty Representative. Only option now available is to select another camera and the would provide a discount and free shipping to return the problem ZR80. to their Recycle Program

My Canon Rebel will not autofocus. It takes pictures just fine with manual focus. I see several posts about this and no solutions other than the user doesn't know how to take a picture. We've had the...

A few suggest about this problem. First in manual or auto focus mode does the green in focus confirmation light come on in the lower right corner of the viewfinder? Are you shooting in One Shot-AF, have you selected an Auto Focus Point are your pictures in focus? I know you've been using this camera for 2 years and these questions you need to ask yourself. If that green confirmation light comes on then the picture will be in focus. a few things that will mess up focus are little or no contrast. No contrast like huge expanses of water, sky, glass or infinity will render a auto focus system near useless. Something that is good is that you haven't said anything about error codes which is good. These questions my sound lame but ask yourself this when was the last time I cleaned the lens (Front Element) use a lens cloth for this and huff on it if a little moisture is needed. Do you change lenses often and when was the last time you checked your sensor for dirt? If you have had the lens off you should check the rear lens element for finger prints or oil. A dirty rear lens element will cause everything to look as if it's shot in a dream world. Check your camera sensor buy taking a (manual) focus shot of a piece of clear blue sky download it to the computer increase the size to 100% and check out the blue for dirt. A camera that's two years old and used "normally" may need the sensor cleaned. But go back to this infocus light if it's coming on and the pictures are out of focus then you have another problem as in dirt.
Hope this was a little insight into your problem

Lens issues with Nikon D40 camera

Have you ever cleaned the contacts on the lens and the camera body where they meet? If not, do so now with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Focus error? The camera won't focus. Focus Error is displayed in the viewing screen. Zoom action & everything else seems to work fine. Won't focus, won't take pictures.

This is a known issue with Fuji S3000 cameras caused by dust and dirt that get in through the loosely mounted lens mechanism, there are only three solutions.

  1. If under warranty you can send the camera in for repair.
  2. Saturate around the lens with WD40 and wiggle the lens until it becomes responsive again every month or so.
  3. Dismantle the camera and clean out around the internal gear-box and lens components about once a year.

Camera won't take a picture when autofocus is on

It sounds like you have a problem with the auto focus on the lens. The 18-135 has a focusing motor inside the lens itself. If this motor is not working, then it won't focus. It could also be the contacts (small and silver on the lens look like ball bearings buried halfway into the top part of the lens where it connects inside the camera body) or the contacts inside the camera body. These can be CAREFULLY cleaned with alcohol and a QTip or a clean pencil eraser. Just make sure you don't get anything into the lens or camera.

If the camera is over a year old, it may just be time to take it to the camera shop for a cleaning.

Everything seems fine but won't take a picture, no error message

First of all, you should know that when someone advises you to buy more stuff because of a problem you have, it's very possible they're ripping you off! It's a disgrace that they took advantage of you and sold you all that stuff..

Now, to your problem..

First of all, are you absolutely sure that the camera autofocuses properly? That would be the first thing to check. To make sure, turn the focus selector (on the lens) from auto to manual, try to focus manually (it doesn't matter if it's not 100% accurate) and press the button.

If that's not the case, try other modes. Try the camera in (M)anual mode, for instance. Also, just in case, try to clean (with a dry fabric) the battery contacts and also the battery contacts of the camera.

Darkened Images

Sounds as if your diaphragm may be sticking due to either the camera or the lens. Look at the back of the lens and work the small tab with the aperture ring set to f32 (or 22). See if the tab moves smoothly but with resistance from a spring, or if it sticks or moves roughly. If it does this with other lenses too, another possibility is the aperture lever on the camera. Mount the lens and set it for f22 or so and use your depth of field preview to see if the lens is stopping down smoothly. In either case it may need professional repair.

How do I remove lines

I had the problem of the horizontal grey lines with some pixels of pink. I ran the dry head cleaner a few times and the lines became solid grey with the sound now skipping worse than before. I cried, cleaned again, then played the tape. I did this about 4 times and still had no luck.

I then decided to try to record with a new tape around the room to see what would happen. After recording I played the tape back and it worked perfectly. I then went back the old tape that would not play properly and it worked fine! Seems like when I used the record button after cleaning it a few times everything worked fine, wierd.

Hope this might help someone.

Cannon Digital Rebel XT

"it no longer takes pictures" i'll need a bit more information from you but for now my first suggestion would be to (if the camera still powers up) try testing the shutter by finding the "sensor clean" option in your menu. (i don't have mine in front of me at the moment, but it's usually one of the last options) first remove the lens and select the sensor clean option. if the shutter opens, then the camera body itslef should be fine. the camera will instruct you how to close the shutter after. be extremely careful when the image sensor is exposed like this, make sure not to touch it and be sure to be in a clean area (dust on your sensor will frustrate you beyond belief) now i've had problem after problem with this standard 18-55mm lens. if the lens can't find a focal point, it won't fire. try switching to manual focus and see if it fires. if while focusing manually there is any resistence or grinding, chances are your lens is shot perhaps from being dropped or there is debris preventing auto focus mode to find a focal point. "i've had my camera for about a year" if you bought it new and have had it under a year, it should still be covered by warrenty and canon will take it back and make repairs (they gave me a new lens when this happened to me)
