I have a dell desktop computer running windows xp. Starts up fine winodws starts booting up then screen goes black. I tried starting in safe mode, which it did but the screen was still black, just said safe mode at the bottom. Nothing comes up when I right click. I can use the buttons on the monitor to bring up the main menu for the monitor screen and have reset it to factory settings. Still black screen
The problem may very well be with your monitor. Try to plug your computer to a different monitor and turn it on that way. If it turns on, then you'll know to get a new monitor. If it does not, then you may think about getting a new graphics card.

NTLDR is the boot loader for windows XP. This is the part the kick starts the entire process of XP loading. It is located at C:\NTLDR One of the easier ways to fix this is Either boot in to the recover console from a Windows XP disc, or download Hiren Boot CD, burn it to a disc. Insert the CD into your Dell and reboot the computer. Note you may need to enter BIOS and enable boot to CD/DVD. Once at the Hiren menu, select Boot Mini XP. Once the Mini XP loads you can copy NTLDR loader from the mini xp to your C:\ drive. Then remove the disc and reboot the computer.
That is the computer problem, try booting in safe mode to see it works OK, if it does, you can try uisng system restore to take it back the known working date before the problem start.
sounds luike you might have had a virise and its wiped somonthing it souldint have out you can save your things in safe mode and re do the os (reinstall windows ) if you recantly conected hardware to then unistall and disonect it then retry it
have you tried booting in safe mode? When it starts press F8 and select "Safe Mode" or "Last Known Good Configuration.". On that 10th try you do get it to come up make sure you install all updates for your computer. Then you can put int he Optiplex disk from Dell and run some diagnostics.
Turn the computer's power on.
Immediately put the original Windows XP CD into the drive.
Tell the computer to boot from the CD (not from the hard-drive).
Does it start to boot from the CD?
Do you get as far as the "repair/install" boot-screen?
If so, your basic hardware is OK, and turn your computer off,
rather than choosing "repair" or "install".
Then, it's probably either the hard-drive that is failing,
or the installed copy of Windows XP is fuddle-duddle-ucked up, so that it cannot finish the "Windows startup" processing.
Bruce, the Dell OptiPlex GX260 normally will be equipped with a PC133 DDR1 128MB RAM module. It is recommended that you upgrade to higher memory bus DDR1 memory module, for example, 512MB/1GB DDR 1 running on 266 MHz to 533 MHz.
Hope this helps. Make sure u come back here if u still have further request.
If you boot from the XP CD and choose the first repair option it will load to a DOS prompt. From there type "chkdsk /r" and press enter. This will run checkdisk on your hard drive and repair any problems that it finds. It will take 45 minutes or more depending on the size of your drive. Once it finishes type exit to reboot and remove the CD. Your computer should boot normally.
Hi,
To resolve the problem,do the following step,
1. Power on the system
2. At dell logo screen before windows xp starts to load tap on the F8 key slowly 5 to 8 times
3. Select safe mode
4 Hit enter on the next screen and logon using the administrator or your name
5. Do the system restore, when you have logged on, this would return your system back to the date when it was working fine
6. To system restore
click start>all programs>accessories>system tools >system restore
Thanks for the comment but neither right or left clicking does anything
"old" I guess, I bought it in 2004 I think.
The problem is now fixed. After using F8 I chose "Last know good configuration" and it fixed the problem. thanks to all who help.
