My reliance 501 is leaking at both entry hoses ports and also is very hot to the touch near the electrical connection port on the top of the water heater.

Emergency steps:
Turn electric power off.
Release tank pressure by opening bathtub faucet on hot side.
Turn off water supply to heater.
You can turn water heater ON for short periods (1/2 hour) to make some hot water until repairs are made.

It sounds like runaway heating caused by shorted element, possibly caused by leaking water. But I cannot tell for certain what the problem is. Read following links and/or call plumber.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html

Over-amping:
Look at watt rating label on side of tank.
For example 4500 watt water heater requires 30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire.
If you have 20 amp breaker and 12 gauge wire, then change elements to max 3800 watts. Tank will heat more slowly.

You have to fix leaks, and I cannot see that problem. Call plumber or repost question with clear description of leak.

SOURCE: need to empty reliance 501 hot water heater how?

1) Shut the breaker off to it at the panel. 2) Hook a hose up to it (the bottom has a drain). 3) Close the valve to the water heater (on the cold water supply). 4) Open drain on the bottom of water heater. 5) Open the relief valve to allow air into the tank (it won't drain otherwise - think if you put your finger on one end of a straw - the liquid stays in until you let go). Why are you draining it by the way?

SOURCE: Reliance gas water heater 40 capicity, has a leak on the top

Most likely only one of the pipes is leaking but weaping enough to cover the top and indented places near both inlet and outlet. This leak has most likely penetrated all the insulation and is a problem throughout the tank wrap insulation...If you are able to blow air continuously long enough to determine which connection is leaking then fix it. It will likely to take quite a while to dry out all the insulation if the water has migrated down into the tank wrap... If you determine that the insulation is waterlogged, you may be able to drill several small holes in the external cover.
good luck

it is quite possible that your heater works on the same principle as one of the other models and just differs in capacity or power rating.

Check the breaker and top thermostat and make sure they are not tripped. Move onto replacing elements if above is not the problem.
Turn water and power off to heater and attach a water hose to bottom of heater to drain down tank. May have to open hot side on a facuet to get it to drain.
Once drained remove elements with 1 1/2" found at local hardware stores. once elements removed and new ones in place. Turn water on and get the air out of the system. Once water is flowing from the hot side from all of facuet's in house.
Once all air is out now yaou are resady to turn power onto heater.

I have a Reliance 501 model # 5 30 2srs4. I had to reset the unit after waking up to cold water. The water heated up in no time at all but the water was super hot. So hot it triped the reset button again....

Hi,
No, the top thermostat will always heat first and then it should dwitch the power to the bottom one after the top of the tank heats...this is to get you hot water faster...
The top thermostat is bad and is not shutting off or switching....
Replace the top thermostat/reset combination and you''l be good!!

Where do I find the hot water control on a reliance 501 electric water heater?

You will find thermostat and limit switchs behind removable cover plates on front of heater. Remove four screws to remove covers. You will need to slightly part insulation inside to se thermostat. They are adjustable using ablade scredriver,Usually from 90-140 degrees. Temperature setting is set by turning screw which moves arrow pointer to desired setting. Be careful of touching any of the power wires. Hope this helps. Thanks

Does the 501 ahve an anode rod. If so, how do I replace it

Every water heater has an anode rod.

Reliant manuals

http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/om.html
Reliant is made by American

I don't find a 501 manual under gas water heaters at reliant.

The Reliant manuals that are available do not show the anode rod in the drawing.
But they do show an access port on top of tank.
The anode rod is usually under the access port which is a round plastic disc.
On some water heaters, the anode rod is under the steel top and you have to remove the screws holding the top on.
Some water heaters, the anode is connected to hot water outlet.
