SOURCE: not drying

If the dryer turns on, drum spins, but you have no heat, any of the following components could be bad:

Heating Element
Thermal Cut-Out
Hi-Limit Thermostat

All these components COMBINED, should cost less than $100. If you fix it yourself, you will avoid the additional cost for labor.

Now, if your dryer keeps failing, it may be for a reason. You need to ask yourself when the last time you cleaned the dryer ventilation was. If you can't remember, or if it has never been done, this could be the cause of your dryer failing. All dryers need proper air flow in order to dry properly. If the ducting becomes clogged, the heating circuits will actually overheat and eventually fail. This usually results in the Thermal Cut-Out (TCO) blowing or the Heating Element failing or BOTH. When these components fail, they must be replaced. Remove the dryer hose from the back of the dryer and inspect it thoroughly from where it leaves the dryer to where it exits your home. It should be clear with no kinks or clogs. If your vent line runs under a crawl space make sure it is suspended above the ground and has no sags where lint could collect. RULE OF THUMB: The SHORTER and STRAIGHTER the vent duct, the BETTER. After you inspect the vent ducting, turn the dryer on and make sure you have forceful air flow coming form the dryer. This will prove that your blower fan is working properly or not. Since you stated that your dryer is not currently heating, the air will be cold, but you should still have some force behind it. If the air flow is weak, you need to clean the duct work INSIDE the dryer. It is important to keep a dryer checked routinely. I recommend once per season (that's 4 times per year). Dryers are the cause of many house fires. These fires are due to lint accumulations inside the unit catching on fire. A little prevent maintenance can prevent significant problems in the future.

Getting to the heating circuit to determine if the components are good or bad is the next step. If your dryer has the lint screen on the top of the unit, you will need to remove the back panel of the dryer to expose the heating circuits. If the dryer has the lint screen in the door, you will need to remove the lower kick panel under the door by using a putty knife to release the retaining clips. They will be located along the seam in the front about 2 inches in from each side. You have to remove the entire front panel on some models. This is accomplished by lifting the dryer top and removing the screws that hold the front panel in place.

NOTE: The heating circuit should be troubleshot with the dryer UNPLUGGED. Dangerous voltages are still present with the dryer turned off. Resistance readings are as follows:

Heating Element (located inside heater box) – remove the two RED leads from the ceramic terminals on the heating element and take a reading across the terminal points. It should read 9 - 13 ohms.

Thermal Cut-Out (TCO) (mounted to the heater box.) - unplug wires and take reading across connector tabs. Reading should be 0 ohms.

Hi-Limit Thermostat (mounted to the heater box, closest to the heating element leads) - unplug wires and take reading across connector tabs. Reading should be 0 ohms.

If any of the above readings are abnormal, replace the component. NOTE: If the TCO or Hi-Limit Thermostat is defective it is highly recommended by most manufacturers to replace BOTH components at the same time. They are often sold as a set.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Post back with comments if you have any further questions.

SOURCE: clothes not getting dried

Are you sure that the duct is clean and free flowing? If the duct is partially blocked the dryer's efficiency drops dramatically. I would double check the duct at both ends and clean out as required - air flow is very important - with the dryer on - go check the air coming out of he duct outside - if it is very forceful - then the problem is elsewhere - however if only a little bit of sir is coming out - your all plugged up!.

SOURCE: Dries clothes but runs too long & clothes VERY hot

Fixable and possibly a warranty claim. The timer is bad. You will need to get behind the control panel and remove the timer and replace the timer. First I would call whoever it is that yall bought the dryer through and see how long your warranty is. Most of the warranties are only 1 year. But if you bought a extended warranty then you are covered. The part can be found at repairclinic.com

Unplug the unit for 40 minutes and try to reset the main controller. It may just be out of sync.

Let me know.

Thanks!

LG front load dryer jumps from 40 min to 19 min to 5 min in short time. Any suggestions?

Dryers can base their drying time two different ways. If you are using the "dryness" settings, when you first start the cycle, the timer will show a specific time. If the contents dry fairly fast, the moisture sensors in the dryer will reduce the remaining drying time. This may be what is causing your changes. If you want a specific time on the dryer, or the dryness settings aren't getting the clothes as dry as you'd like, opt for a "timed" dryer setting, where you choose the drying time. This bypasses the sensors.

Permanent press cycle keeps shutting down and doesn't finish.

Hello. I don't know what make/model dryer you have but the problem could be with load size and type of clothing. The sensor bars are usually located on the front of the lint screen housing(you have to put your head in the dryer and look back to see them--they are 2 metal strips, approx 1/2" apart and at least several inches long). The damp/wet clothing keeps shorting across the strips, telling the main board to keep the dryer running. If there isn't enough of a load, the dryer may think that the clothes are dry prematurely and count down too quickly. The sensor bar technology *is not* an exact science--it works best on large loads with like clothing. For smaller loads, use time dry and adjust the temp setting accordingly. I hope I helped you.

Dryer knob won't advance when set on sensor drying but will on timed drying

Hello. The dryer has a pair of sensor bars mounted on the front of the filter holder. They look like long metal rails(about 6 inches or so) and are about 1/2 inch apart. When the wet clothes touch these rails, they electrically short across them, which then tells the control board to keep drying--the clothes are wet. As the water is removed from the clothes, this "keep going" signal gets less and less, causing the dryer to count down and eventually stop. There might be a problem with the wires going to these sensor bars or with the control board. If the dryer keeps going and won't shut off during "sensor dry" the wires could be shorted or the control board might have a loose connector or is defective. Since the unit is so new, the chances of lint build-up being the culprit is remote.

The start button is flashing red and beeping and the drying cycle won't start. Help!

  • If the machine shakes or makes a lot of noise, make sure the dryer is level. Some shaking is normal, but it shouldn't bounce around like it's itching to go somewhere. Adjust the leveling legs. They just screw and unscrew. Check to make sure the load inside the dryer is properly distributed and is not all clumped together.
  • Match the control settings to the type of load, and make sure you're not overloading the dryer.
  • Check that the ducts aren't blocked if the clothes take too long to dry. Look for lint or missing socks. Check to make sure the ducting isn't kinked, and make sure the outside dryer vent flap moves freely and isn't blocked---by snow, for example.
  • Sort your clothes by weight if they aren't drying properly. Lightweight clothes should be dried separately from items like comforters.
  • Make sure the lint drawer is empty.
  • Press the "Stop" button or press the "Lock" button for three seconds if the controls don't work. Press the "Power" button to wake the dryer up if it won't start. Make sure the "Delay Start" button isn't flashing if the machine fails to start. Press "Start" again.
  • If you see only lights displayed on the screen and no numbers, it's normal. The dryer has detected a low level of moisture. Other normal behavior is when the time remaining jumps to a lower number---it's revising its estimated time remaining. When you can't make a selection and the dryer beeps twice, the dryness setting is incompatible with the chosen dry cycle hope this helps please tell me if it does

Dryer on sensor dry - gets stuck on 6 minutes and does not finish

We have been having this same problem. I had tried adjusting everything that I could think of when putting a load of laundry in and got the exact same results as you. I would select the sensor dry and it would count down just like normal until it got to 6 minutes and then it would just run forever at 6 minutes.
My husband and I searched online all this afternoon and came across what seemed way to simple to work. We removed the lint filter, unscrewed the filter housing right inside the door of the dryer, and got to the sensors. We took a damp cloth and wiped them off very well to remove any and all buildup. We wiped everything down very well to remove any built up lint and/or dirt and put everything back in place as was before. We then unplugged the dryer for about a minute and then plugged back in. We put a load of already dry clothes into the dryer and started as usual with the sensor dry. It started out at the usual 41 minutes then skipped down almost immediately to 6 minutes and then a few minutes later I heard the most beautiful sound I have heard in a long time. The Beeper signalling that the timer had counted down to the end and was finished. It had worked. Thankfully. Hope this helps you also.

Sensor dry timer problem

Clean off the moisture sensor bars. They are the silver curved strips about 4 inches long inside the drum near the lint fitler. If you use fabric softner sheets, a waxy build up will coat the bars. The dyer can no longer sense the damp clothes, so it goes into the cool down and then shuts off. Time dry bypasses the moisture sensor.
