SOURCE: WHERE TO FIND FREE MAP FOR CANADA. GPS GARMIN NUVI

My understanding is there are no free maps and anyone using or offering one is liable for prosecution. The use of unpaid maps is Piracy and not part of this forums brief to supply them or point one in the direction to where pirate software may be offered.

Most times the maps require an activation code which is part of the licence code issued with your GPS and the Map being purchased.

Many companies are now applying security tags to maps that when operated lock the unit so it is dysfuctional and has to be sent to the manufacturer to be unlocked for a fee + the licence for new maps, so beware

SOURCE: Is there any free map updates for the garmin nuvi?

Asmany as there are FREE dinners Updates are not free, unless you paid full price for it when you bought it. Free upgrades are a deceptive myth. If you get a free uograde its usually minor and was included in the price of the pack.

No map info on nuvi 205w

Plug your nuvi into your PC. Go to the Garmin.com website and log into your account to see your map information. You can go to your account and see the map downloads and reinstall it from there. Or you can download their software "Garmin Express" on your PC. Run the software while your Garmin is plugged into your PC and it will check for any updates for you.

My gaRMIN NUVI 200 lost it's maps information. How do I recover the information. thanks

You can try contacting Garmin and seeing if they will allow you to download the map again. The file that you are looking for on the Nuvi's flash drive is "gmapprom.img". It should be within the Garmin directory on your Nuvi (using PC to Nuvi USB cable). The file will be very large, around 1GB. More information on missing maps can be found here:

Can not activate nuvi 350. gives: No Map Available..

Connect your unit to a PC and look in the Garmin directory for the following files:

gmapprom.img - ~1GB file size
gmapprom.unl - map unlock file

If these files are missing or if the map file size is much smaller than 1GB then they will need to be replaced. Also check to make sure that your map is not turned off. Go to the map menu screen and make sure that the map is checked (turned on).

Garmin nuvi 200 SD card

Did you rename the file extensions? On the unit, the map file and map unlock file must be named gmapprom.img and gmapprom.unl

On the SD card they must be named gmapsupp.img and gmapsupp.unl.

Also copy your garmindevice.xml file over to the SD card too.

Garmin Nuvi 1350 showing on screen "no map data available"

Shut off the nuvi.

Remove any memory card (if equipped) from your nuvi.

Plug the GPS into your computer via USB cable.

Open the Garmin "drive" icon in "My Computer"

Navigate to the x:/Garmin directory or "folder" (where "x:" is the drive letter assigned to your Garmin). Locate either map files set(s) named: gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img.

Some units store map files in the hidden x:/.System directory instead. To view the .System folder and contents, you must direct your computer to display both the "system" and "hidden" files.

If you lack large files named either gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img (about 1 GB or more); your maps are missing from the internal memory of the nuvi and will need to be reloaded.

If you pulled a memory card above, reinsert it and check the directories for the same gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img files. If they're not present there, the maps should be reloaded.

I hope this helps

I bought a lifetime update from Garmin a few years ago but now my nuvi 270 tells me that I don't have enough memory to install the latest maps and that I must choose only certain regions. I have an 8Gb...

The internal memory of the nuvi is full. Some maps will need to be delete before any new maps can be added. Typically, the map in the nuvi is named GMAPPROM.IMG and a map installed to an SD (or SDHC) memory card is named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

1) Remove the SD card from the memory slot

2) Connect the nuvi to the computer via USB cable.

3) Open the nuvi drive.

4) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

5) Empty the Recycle Bin.

6) Retry the map update of the nuvi.

This method will take some time to perform depending on how many map segments you are sending to the nuvi. Transferring the entire map can take over an hour. A quicker way is to send the maps to the SDHC card directly by inserting the card into a card reader. This eleminates the slow Garmin card reader from the equation and transfers are done in a fraction of the time. No maps will be on the nuvi - they will all be on the memory card instead. To update the SD or SDHC card, do this:

1) Repeat steps 1 thru 5 above. This removes the maps files from the nuvi.

2) Disconnect the nuvi from the computer.

3) Connect a card reader to the computer.

4) Insert the SD or SDHC card into the reader.

5) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

6) Update the map to the SD or SDHC card.

When either method is employed, only one map file set will result. GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of this file set. You should ensure / change the name to GMAPPROM.IMG. Any subsequent file set added should be named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.

Hi, I have a Nuvi 255 (205 series) gps, three years old. Last week the screen went blank, came back grey with 'crosshairs' and a black dot in the middle indicating 'press here'. I did so and the dot moved...

Graham - what your describing sounds like you somehow managed to erase the street level maps and POIs in your Nuvi.

If you connect the GPS to the computer with your USB cable, you should at the contents of the Nuvi directories and find a file called GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG. These are the street level map files. Generally, these are found in the root directory of the Nuvi - or if yours has / and you use a memory card slot for maps - find it in the /GARMIN directory. GMAPPROM.IMG is the name of the first map set and GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of the supplementary or second map set (if you purchased & installed one). You will likely have only one of these files - and may be named either. The size of this file depends on the area and age of the map. Current maps of the entire US run over 1 GB in size. If you do not have any maps named GMAPPROM or GMAPSUPP, you will not see any street level maps.

Something happened to delete the maps. Garmin will probably NOT provide free replacement maps for you, unless under warranty. If the devices is trashing maps and other files, you probably want to replace the unit under warranty or not. Garmin will, upon return of your old Nuvi - replace it with a factory refurbished unit with the latest maps installed, for $79. You can take advantage of this service by following this link to Garmin Service.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply. Thank you.
