Turn off the power and look inside the machine to the right hand side. Just in front to f the print head you will see a white plastic dowel (see photo). Use something technical - like a finger, pen or screwdriver - to push this dowel in. You can then move the print head by hand to the middle of the carriage.

Once moved, turn the printer on and watch it travel back to the home position. If after returning home the dowel pops back out and does not retract itself, you will need to strip the machine out and rebuild the ASF section. Sounds hard but its just a few plastic parts to take apart and reassemble whilst looking to see if anything is broken.

Get a service manual; for the machine HERE if you need to strip it out.

SOURCE: waste ink pad saturated. EPSON STYLUS PHOTO R360

Replacing the pads is costly, messy and requires the printer to be taken completely apart. If you have little or no experience of stripping down printers it is best left to a proffessional. Contact Epson to find your nearest service centre, but remember to get a quote as it may be more economical to replace the printer. Sometimes the counter can "jump" to the end of life number, this especially happens where 3rd party or refilled inks have been used. If you believe this to be the case and there is no sign of ink leakage and the pads look fairly clean then you can just reset the counter using special software called the SSC utility. See these sites:
http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html
More information about this issue and the "official" Epson resetter is available from the Epson web site, please read this link:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp

Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.

SOURCE: reset ink-pad counter on epson stylus photo 1400

Hi,

The simplest way to do this is to grab a copy of the A10_IPR utility that Epson distribute to their customers...

The utility is available to North American customers if you register no this site page http://www.epson.com/ipr/

The utility is also know to be available in the wild if you search for "waste ink ipr".

Just remember to scan any download using a virus and malware scanner before you attempt to use it as some utilities contain trojans or similar nasties.

Hope that helps.

Restting waste tank counter

Hi,

You can reset this using the SSC utility available via this site:
http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

The main site is different but the link above includes a much better guide on how to use it.

It's important to note that you will need to deal with the waste ink pads and/or redirect the waste ink tube to an external tank to ensure you do not flood your printer with waste ink when the pads in the base of the printer become over-saturated.

The information for dealing with this is provided here:
http://www.octoink.co.uk/store/pages/Epson-RX420.html

... whilst it's for a different printer model, the general principles are the same so it should help get you sorted.

Reset waste ink counter on Epson C60 printer

If both lights are flashing, it means the Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink "protection" counter has exceeded its limit. The Waste Ink Pads should be replaced as soon as possible. You can restore your printer to a working condition immediately by using the SSC utility - download from

http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

and use it to reset the Protection Counter. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation.

However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. This requires the disassembly of the printer.

If you decide to have a go at replacing the ink pads yourself, report back and I will provide further help.

My epson stylus photo R230 can't print

@Edysing: That indicates the waste ink pads have reached what the printer considers to be saturation point.

The solve this you need to download the SSC utility from here

Note: Make sure you're using a Windows XP machine (it won't work with Vista or Mac)

Install the utility as normal and then configure it via the configuration tab to your R230 printer and the appropriate printer model "Epson Stylus Photo R220/R230"

Then:
  • Close the utility and locate the little printer icon in your system tray (bottom right corner of screen)
  • Right click on this icon and scroll up to "Protection Counter"
  • Click on the "Reset Protection Counter"
  • Locate and click on the "Clear counter overflow" option too
  • Now turn off your printer, wait a few seconds and then turn it back on again
You should now find your printer has reset the waste ink counter and you can printer again.

With that done you should then decide how to redirect your waste ink to an external tank.

Google can help with a few kits out there or you can always find instructions for creating your own...

DO NOT ignore the waste ink issue though as the pads will become oversaturated and leak ink if you leave the issue unresolved.

Hope that helps.
