Have old Hotpoint CSX24D side by side; no longer stays cold enough. Have checked door gaskets and cleaned everything cleanable. Husband (who has handled freon before working with automotive air conditioning systems) thinks it's low on freon as it's an old unit.

Check the refrigerator for level. Front can be a little higher than the back. Check for products that many be stored that may be holding the door from closing completely. Check the door hinges and make sure they are tight.

I will get this question out of the way immediately to eliminate any other issue...Do you have a dog? Ok, hope that clears that up.LOL
Now, the first thing that I would check is for a cracked defrost pan, or a misaligned drain tube. Look REAL close at the pan as some cracks are not very obvious.
Next, check to see if all door seals are contacting the mullion strips, and no hinges are misaligned.Inspect door shelves and interior shelves to assure that no food items are extending over the edges, impeding the closure of the doors.
If you have an automatic icemaker, inspect all fill tube connections.
That's about all I can offer you at the moment.
Post me back if you need more assistance.
Thank you,
Dave E. (Illeagle)
SOURCE: I have an old Hotpoint refrigerator. My problem
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload
relay.
Check to see if the
condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no
check fan.
Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should
be warm
Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the
back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL)
or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR
PROBLEM).

Removing the door gasket would probably reveal screws to separate both shells of the door - warning: door gaskets are expensive and may be hard to find on a fridge that old, so be gentle with it.

SOURCE: Ice maker hose running, not shutting off when ice
Replace the water valve ( pt # WR57X10051 ) . This piece is what the wall water line connects to on the refrig . Also , due to the age of the refrig , I would suggest removing the ice maker ( 2 screws ) and inspecting the inside of the mold for coating disintegration which would cause water to seep thru the uncoated aluminum ( or bubbled coating ) causing the ice maker to leak , but , appear to be overfilling . In this case , replace the ice maker instead .

Thanks for the suggestions, all. The first thing we checked was the doors and seals and they are okay. Husband took a vacuum to everything to make sure the compressor and coils were not coated in cat hair- no dog, David, but several cats- but that didn't change anything. (there is no puddle forming anywhere) Food is kept cold but not cold enough- the freezer is sitting around 20 degrees F instead of where it should be. The manual, which we've downloaded, doesn't give the type of Freon it uses (probably the unit was built before there *was* more than one type); we can't seem to find what type anywhere including on the Hotpoint site.
