Oven will not switch on

I have a SMEG single oven SE210NE. The oven will not switch on. All Iget is the letter 'A' switching on in the display. The oven light bulb does not switch on. I have changed the thermostat but nothing changed.

My Smeg oven will not work either. All I get is an "A" on the display, the clock has disappeared and as a result the oven won't come on. I see from other postings here I can bypass the clock so that the oven works again - can anyone advise how I do this?

If there is an A only on the clock(no other digits) your clock has failed. Either replace , or can be bypassed. Oven won't work without clock set.

This is something, a qualified person should do. The digital clock has spade connectors on the back, a live connector in and out(also a neutral connector). If you know what you are looking at, a "piggy back" connector, which connects the live-in and live-out together, thus bypassing the clock. A simple procedure for someone who knows what they are looking at. Remember this is only when the digit "A" and nothing else is displayed on the clock(different to "a- auto", where clock IS displayed as well). In this case, oven will not work either, as clock needs to be set.

SOURCE: light bulb

for most smeg, the bulb cover just unscrews as does the bulb and the bulb is a heat-proof small edison screw type

We need to slam the oven door to switch off the intenal light and make the oven work?

cleaning your oven door switch might help but I would consider replacing the switch. The switches are sealed and cleaning does not work well.

It is brand new oven, the light is permanentl on and the function nob dose not function

Don't even try adjust or open any part of the unit. Take it back to the dealer or you will invalidate your warranty and that is not worth it. Let the dealer worry about it.

My light bulb keeps blowing i have replaced it twice with a 25watt and as soon as i switch it back on the bulb blows

Perhaps you have up to 240 V on the lamp socket and you are installing a 120V bulb. Check for wiring faults, especially an open neutral or ground connection in the oven. If the lamp socket neutral is connected to the neutral on a lower-resistance device on the other leg, but the wire connecting these two items is not connected to the power cord neutral, the voltage across the bulb will be more than it can handle. In this scenario, the other device (heating element, timer, or whatever) will probably not work or will work poorly after the bulb blows.

The contacts have welded close on the switch that controls whatever element that comes on automatically. Replace switch

Smeg oven not working. only clock and thermostat light working

It sounds like you have either one of the following things that need attention. First, turn off both breakers to the oven and then back on. Next check the wiring from the receptacle to the back of the oven. Next, check your internal fuses. Most ovens have them. Last, check the wiring to the elements and control switches. Somewhere you have a wire burned off the terminals or control switch. That smell you referred to is probably one of the wires that may be burned.
