Sylvania 6842PEM Was watching tv when I heard a loud pop and saw the screen flash a bright lite. Now the tv will not stay on. It turns itself off (standby). The tv is 15 months old. The full warranty expired after 1 year but the display is covered for three years. Does this sound like a display problem? Or what could it be?

I have the same problem, and have mine in the shop. They are trying to replace the power board.

The repair shop is having the part shipped from Funai on a boat. I didn't know with UPS and Fed Ex available, companies still sent things via boat.

    Is this normal.

The display was the problem with mine. After a long wait... Sylvania finally admitted that the part to repair the TV was not available. They refunded the entire purchase price including tax. The whole process took about three months but it worked out. Bought a new LG brand LCD HDTV and everyones happy.

Have fixed a bunch of those as a Sylvania ASC. There is a small ceramic capacitor on the main power PCB that has ruptured. It must be replaced with a different part, a special type of capacitor, or it will just fail again. Sylvania had recommended replacing the main power PCB rather than repair because sometimes there was additional damage on the board, however replacing the capacitor fixed every one that came to us. I preferred that because some electrical voltages have to be adjusted if the circuit board is replaced with a different one.

The loud pop and flash and sometimes a puff of smoke is characteristic of the capacitor failure on the main power board. People ship that board to me and I refurbish it for $90 and they just put it back in and it works. If the board is not refurbishable, I ship them a repacement for $105, but some adjustments are required with a digital voltmeter to match the new board to the set. If the set owner can do that, fine, but if they cant they may have to call in a technician and the technician may prefer to supply the replacement board in order to warranty the job.

It sounds like the driver ICs blew and is a common fault with alot of these plasma TV sets. Some manufacturers have the driver ICs mounted on the display panel, some have a differant driver board for these IC's. You will need to take the set in and have it looked over and hopfully the display drivers is part of the complete panel. Good Luck

Samsung HLR5078W pop sound followed by a loud buzz then shut down

Your lamp burst. This model uses a lamp housing which does not have a filter screen on it. When the lamp bursts, hot pieces of glass and mercury (very toxic) drop straight down into the cooling fan below it. Although FixYa.com (implies I'm suppose to tell you how to fix it) I am going to tell you to call a servicer and have them clean that mess out of there. It's a health issue, I don't want someone unknowingly exposed to mercury on my watch. Let the servicer know what he is getting into. I hope this helps.

New TV 9 mos old, Won't stay on after power up? Remote or manual turn on, set keeps turning off after 1-2 second green on and brief screen flash.

I would try leaving the TV unplugged for 30mins so the TV can reset itself.
If that doesn't work, your TV should still be under warranty. I know 95% of come with a 1 year warranty.
The most common problem with Sylvania TVs made by FUNAI, the Backlight Inverter board fails to early in life. ( That's the part that powers the screen)
The Tv can't power up the screen and it turns off automatically. Basically called "Protection Mode" so it protects the other parts inside the TV.

Tv went out after loud pop and has clicking noise does not turn on

If you have a Sony DLP, then the loud pop you heard is your lamp.  The lamps last approx. 4K-6K viewing hours.  Read your manual for replacement part number to reorder and very simple to replace yourself.

Loud Pop, blown Breaker

Pull the unit away from the wall and inspect from rear. However, if all is fine, perhaps you simply overloaded the circuit that once. Were you running any other appliances (overhead microwave) at the same time?
