It may help with notebook BIOS passwords. Re-seating the CMOS battery on notebooks to reset the BIOS information hasn't worked for over a decade!
so true, but they dream that all PCs are the same and are not.
8 years old today 2011 made.
they fail to ask HP what to do, and come here first, why I have no clue why go to fixya and not the HP great forum. first.
hp.com form
google HP PC support, join and ask.
as millions do.
or RTM read page 71 and learn the steps.

some PCs the RTC is under hatch (bottom laptop
others are pure H3LL , and bingo this.PC.
they made it as hard as possible to service.
all techs know this, we dismantle laptops like this, learn it.
1: all bottom hatches off. no. not there.
2: remove all cards in hatch pits, ram/wifi./etc, nop not there.
3: keyboard off is easy with screws bottom off. or worse, as this one is.
nope not yet, (if keyboard is married to top)
4: the top cover off, usb card out, not yet.
5: power jack pulled...
6:display removed, not seen yet.
7: motherboard pulled, and inverted BINGO
pure hell. but all laptops we do this.
1 by 1 we do that until mr RTC is in view.
every time.
or simply learn to RTM read the manual first.
at HP.com
the DVD and HDd were removed at step 2b.

one thing you can do is to disconnect the CMOS battery for about a minute or so to let the charge drain away, then re-connect it ( you could always renew it at the same time as they don't last forever ) This will reset the BIOS to default settings and a password will no longer be required. Good luck !

unplug the internal battery for 5 minutes, then reboot with power battery out (only on mains). It is documented in the manual.
When you pull the battery it will set your cmos back to factory
defaults.
Do one thing first, Your CMOS holds a lot of important information so before you go messing around with the batteryWRITE DOWN YOUR SETTINGS.

SOURCE: hp compaq nx8220 - Administrator password cannot be reset
If this issue started with a motherboard error that appeared to be a faulty CMOS battery and then it started incorrectly detecting your memory and now is asking for a password it could be a faulty motherboard. If you are 110% you or anyone else has set a password on that laptop then I would say your motherboard needs to be replaced. It is a difficult process to reset admin passwords on most laptops due to a security chip that will prevent the trick of removing the battery from working. In all honestly if no one has set a password and the motherboard THINKS someone has then even if you reset the password you will still have issues. There is a small chance your CPU or RAM could be defective. But, again going back to it saying you have a password set that was never set. It just yells faulty motherboard unless someone has set a password without you knowing.
