I have a powermate 5000W generator and it starts fine, however after it is up and running it starts to struggle. The weird thing is if I pull the air filter cover it runs better, I don't actually have to remove the filter just the cover, seems like it is having issues with airflow, but I have no idea why. Any thoughts here? The engine is a Subaru.

the gensets on coleman generators are definately nothing to brag about but i would start by checking the windings and make sure the brushes have a clean armature to ride on

I recommend that you purchase your air filter at -
tewarehouse.com
They offer the lowest prices that I have seen and it is good quality.

when engine runs but no power is produced ...there are three things you need to check:
1- brushes may be shattered.(open the generating unit cover(from the stator and rotor side) and you'll find it..if it is shattered..then replace it.
2- breaker...to test this disfunction...connect the two wires(the one going to it and the one coming out of it) together and try again...if it generated power..then the breaker is out of order...either replace it...or keep it connected directly (DON'T leave any naked wires)
3- AVR open the generatng unit cove again.you'll find the AVR (screwed to the rotor holder) here is a picture of an AVR:
if it is burnt out...replace it..
IF you tried the 3 things i wrote and none of them worked, then you have a problem with the stator or the rotor...but that is very rare to happen...it's probably one of the three///..

What brand of engine & horsepower is it?Also about how long was it stored or last time it was run? The reason I ask is if it was stored with gas in it & a fuel stabilizer wasn't added to it,your primary jet is plugged in the carburetor(reason it will only run while choked).

you dont say if diesel / petrol.
if petrol check the choke mechanisim.
if diesel injector may need cleaning or re setting
