Watch has lasted over one year on original battery when it started to go out. I just opened it up, being careful to not disturb miniscule spring, replaced battery, put cover back on and all it reads is "ERROR" - took battery out again and let it watch sit open for three minutes, repeated process - same thing....is it human error or watch error? Garmin Manual is worthless for this please help need to start half marathon training very soon!

It sounds to me as you are having the problem with faulty contacts. They should be cleaned and checked for stiffness- if too weak must be replaced.
The next possible cause can be integrated circuit (IC) failure. In this case only skilled watchmaker can help you and that gonna be costly.
