You normally need to tell the system that it is receiving an optical signal, on mine, which is a different model you have to select the relevant button that corresponds with the area in which you plugged the optical cable (ie video 1, video 2, audio 1, audio 2) and then press the system button followed by the set-up button. You should then be able to scroll across the options with the arrow keys, watching the display until you see input analog, then use the up and down arrows until you see optical. Bingo you should have sound!

When the receiver is rebooted, the power light will come on and then go out. This is normal. After several seconds the power light will illuminate again and it will acquire satellite signal. Again, when power is removed and restored to the receiver, it is normal for the green power light to go out and then illuminate again. I hope this helps.
