You've got self heating and electric. Where are you planning to put this? How cold does it get? I would say to find used ones online (ebay or craigslist) but some cats won't use another cats bed so be careful in your purchase.

Before buying a bed for your cat, make sure the bed meets the following standards: - The bed is big enough for the cat to stretch out comfortably. - The bed should be easily accessible for the cat. What are the different types of heating beds for cats?

There are two types of heating beds for cats: thermal beds and electric beds. Thermal beds use insulating material, which uses the body heat of the cat in order to warm up the bed. Electric beds use electricity in order to warm up the bed. This allows the bed to be warm at all time. This type of heating bed is most expensive. If you have a tight budget, you can get your cat a microwavable pad in order to provide it with warmth. The downside of these pads is that they provide heat for only 30 minutes to an hour.

I live in Ottawa and during the winter months it gets extremely cold. My cat needs a warm place to sleep. Can anyone suggest a type of bed that would be best suited to by situation?

I have the perfect solution for you - a radiator hammock cat bed. This bed connects to the radiator in your home giving your cat a comfortable and warm place to rest.

You can buy one at most specialty pet stores or online at one of these locations:

What factors do I need to consider when buying a bed for my cat?

There are several factors to keep in mind when buying a cat bed. First is size. It should be large enough for your cat to stand in and turn around with ease, but snug enough to be cozy and secure for your cat. Second is warmth. Enclosed beds hold the heat in much better than open beds. Comfort should be an obvious factor in bed selection. Lastly, you will need to consider methods of cleaning. Try to get a bed that is machine washable since you will need to clean the bed frequently.
