1990 Toro model 38080 in the slowest speed it begins to throw snow just fine. After about five feet of travel, the discharge begins to reduce until there is no snow coming out of the chute. The motor runs but the auger has stopped. If the thrower sits still, in neutral for a moment, the snow bubbles out of the base of the chute until enough snow clears then in a few moments the snow comes from the chute graduallly with more force until the chute is clear and the auger gradually returns to normal running speed. I just replaced both the drive belt and the auger belt. My concern is that I will over tighten the auger belt. I had the same problem before I replaced the auger belt.
The problem could be the snow is to heavy for the motor to keep up, if thats the case you may need to upgrade to a more powerful model or try not to overload it. take it a little slower so the motor can keep up. but try tightening the belt. with your pointer finger push down on the belt it should have about a half inch give, if it moves more than that its too loose and probably slipping under load
