I had changed the machine to 3 thread threading. I'm now trying to change it back to 4 threads with the second needle. It's difficult to see exactly what to do in the directions. I did it and it sews, but the 4th thread comes out totally separate on the material. Shouldn't it be combined in the chain, or does the 4th thread stay separate from the chain?
Also, when I threaded the 4th thread through #6 in the manual ("Lay the thread in the notch on the thread take-up lever"), I put it through the tiny hole. Is that correct?

With some sergers, but not many (singer 14u64 comes to mind), the top of the stitch will be an overedge that mates with the right needle thread, and the left needle thread will appear as a separate straight stitch. When you look at the underside of the stitch, the overedge will go all the way over to the left needle (the full width of the stitch). This is normal if you have this type of machine. Another stitch some sergers do (2/4 thread sergers) is a 2 thread chain thal looks like a lone straight stitch on both sides, and a 2 thread separate overedge.
As far as the threading of the takeup, it totally depends on your model. Always post your model number when you have questions as sergers vary greatly in design.

rethread the machine
check the top tension-usually 3 or 4 is good
change the needle & make sure it's inserted correctly (flat side to the back of machine)
some needles & thread do not work togeather--try this
Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread
also make sure the thread tail are 3-6 inches long & pulled behind the needle
rethread the machine
try a top thread tension of 3 or 4
change the needle
always keep a thread tail of 3-5 inches on top & bobbin thread & keep the thread pulled back behind needle before starting to sew
always keep the bobbin area clean of lint & loose thread
& check under the needle plate for lint also
you might consider having the machine serviced, since you said it sounds like a tractor
some needle & thread are not compatable-try this

When you thread the serger, your suppose to start threading the 3rd spool (left to right) first, then the 4th spool, then thread the 2nd spool which ends up in the second needle (left to right), There is a lever or bottom looper that the thread must go through before placing thread through the 2nd needle. Finally, the last spool to thread is the 1st spool (left to right). Follow the threading pattern and once you put the thread through the two loops that look like springs, turn the wheel at the right toward you until you can see like a lever with a ****, thread that **** from the back then put the thread through the machine to the right. Turn the knob to toward you again until the upper looper is showing, then you have the put your thread through the hole in that looper then through the first needle. You should now have 4 thread toward the back of your machine which you need to place under the presser foot and to the left side of the machine. There is also a VHS video that goes with the machine to help explain how to thread your serger. Also be sure that each spool of thread is in the tension of the upper colored tension wheels. If it is not, then your stitiches will be loose. Good luck and I hope this helps. I had to watch the video several times before I got it.
