Had new tires installed recently, and wanted an alignment, but they said they could'l align it and stand behind it, until the ball joints were replaced. I got a bid on replaceing them and it's high dollar, so I'm lookin' to see if I can buy the parts and install 'em myself.
They can be replaced by a home mechanic, sometimes it a real pain, some times it requires a few specialty tools, some times a bf hammer some socket pieces and a pickle fork. all different vehicles are some what different from each other.
get a shop manual for your vehicle read the procedure on how to do it and decide if its easier to pay or not.
best of luck.

Its a pain but you have to get a big pry bar in there to move it. I use a 6 foot piece of 12AWG Strut and pry it down.
