I have the same chainsaw and have never had a problem with it.
If you have changed the starter rope or recoil spring in the past, it is important that you hold the new spring with needle nose pliers and install it correctly. Once the spring is in make sure wind the rope correctly-clockwise. If not the new spring will be damaged.
how old is the polan 16 inch is it a solid body saw or does it have anti vibration handles, so your hands dont go numb after cutting for 15 minutes.reason i asked is: you can buy a brand new reconditioned homelite with anti vibration handle for 85.00&shiping. at the very least, your polan needs the recoil starter fixed and that does not address why the poulan got hot & started to smoke. For the problems you described , at least $100.00 labor plus parts to fix at a chain saw shop It might barely be worth it if you were a do it yourselfer and wanted to try to fix it. if you dont want to be a diy chain saw mechanic, sell your polan for parts for $20.00 on ebay and buy a new homelite 16 inch 38 cc with anti vibration handle ,so you can cut for 6 hours straight, if need be. You get a reconditioned saw that is ready to go and a 90 day warranty. or buy the saw brand new for $110.00 and free shipping@ amazon.com
The starter housing is removed with a #20 Torx bit, then the cord replacement becomes obvious. You'll need to prewind the spring about half it's capacity before engaging the cord reel to the rewind spring. Good luck with it. These cords won't break if you use short pulls, preferably with your foot holding the right hand hold to the floor.
This reply is based on the following assumptions:
A Poulan PP2375LE (wildthing) Type 2
The starter recoil spring is unwound.
All components aer servicable
If the spring needs rewound this is how I do it, there are other methods. Recoil Spring Rewind I invert and secure the housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, and both hands). I am right handed so I tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool.
This illustrates proper pretension and rope installation:

I recommend you contact Poulan 1-877-500-7499, there may be a free replacement kit available. If you call please have your saw at your side before dialing. hey fark
This is easy. Take off rope housing (four screws). Once off, pull the string out 3/4 of the way. Once out, tie string around spindle one extra time ( real easy just wrap string once more around winding spool ). This oughta make string snap back after pulls.
