Motorola Dual Tuner PVR - DCT 6412-III --- HELP

I own a Motorola Dual Tuner PVR - DCT6412 - III . I am having a problem with the recording on my unit . I can record a current program in progress only . It will not record any single FUTURE programs nor any serial programs that I have set up . I should say that it was working fine for the past year and all of a sudden developed this problem . The little red light comes on to indicate that the recording has started at the appropriate time but nothing gets recorded. I have gone to the channel that is supposed to be recording and when I hit the OK button on the remote it should indicate a recording is in progress but all I get is a message that says " One moment please this channel should be available shortly " and the screen is black ( no picture ) . I had a friend come over with his unit to determine if it was a line problem from the provider that was causing the problem or if it was my unit that was faulty. His unit works perfectly so it is definitely a problem with my unit .The provider tried several times to resend the signal to see if it would correct the situation but that did nothing to correct it . I contacted Motorola Tech dept. and they indicate it is likely a problem with one of the tuners . Where can I bring this unit for repair in Windsor , Ontario , Canada as the provider ( Cogeco ) will not help in any way as the unit is no longer under warranty . ?

    CAWwindy1,

I need a little more info from the 6416's diagnostics menu. With the unit powered on, press the POWER botton on the 6416 (not the remote) then immediatly press the SELECT button. You might have to press select one or two times to get it.

If you don't see DIAGNOSTICS at the top of the page, press the left arrow button on the 6416 once.

From the diagnostics main menu, use the down arrow to get to d04 (inband status) then press the right arrow. Look at Tuner 1 and Tuner 2 and please let me know what it says for Mode.

In d06 (current channel status) you will want to see what it says for Type and Status for both tuner 1 and tuner 2.

When all done, you can just hit the power button again to get out of the diagnostics mode.

    Thanks :-)

Hi.
The information provided shows that tuner 2 isn't working at all on at least the selected channel. This could be a problem on just some channels with this tuner or possibly all channels. You can verify this by hitting the "SWAP" button on the remote to switch tuners while viewing a live program on a problem channel. If you choose the same channel for each tuner, I expect you will see program on one and "one moment please" or freezing or pixelation on the other. The confusion about recording comes about because of how the DCT6412 chooses which tuner to use for recording versus viewing. If you activate record on a channel you are watching, it will use that tuner. If you see it, it will record. For future or series recordings though it will automatically choose to use the alternate tuner so that it won't have to change your channel selection. Since there is no input signal detected on the other tuner, it will actually record but there will be nothing to see on play back. What causes this? It is probably that tuner 2 has failed. There is a slim chance that your cable signal coming in is either too strong or too weak but this is unlikely since the DCT6412 splits and then amplifies the cable input signal before distributing essentially equal signals to both tuners (the plug on coax adapter on the back feeds the cable signal to an AGC amplifier within the DCT6412 and then splits and distributes that output to both tuner inputs). You could check the OOB AGC level as described here http://www.cable-help.com/ but I think your problem is more likely that tuner 2 has gone bad. JM Belleville Ontario

As a cable provider stand point if your PCR does not lock then you will not recieve the correct signal from your provider which controls the HD functions and TV programming functions. Ie... Temp of Air or black screen.... Have your cable provider to check Mer and Ber signal behind the set and at demark and tap. If mer and ber is not in specs the the PCR will not lock to carrier there for setting box for shut down mode of functions controlled by pcr.......All this sounds crazy but if you have a good cable provider tech he/she can troubleshoot the issue and corrcect the problem

SOURCE: Motorola Dual Tuner PVR - DCT 6412-III --- HELP

I was just reading another blog on this problem and it seems you must clear any recording setup you have for the program the go to the settings and in the history file delete all listings of it. This can take a while as you must delete them one at a time. Then you can reset the series or single recordings. Seems to work for some people. I am having the same problem and programs are disapearing one at a time. Good Luck

Motorola Dual Tuner PVR 6412-III ( HD )

If you cannot get it repaired, note that it has a 120GB disk-drive -- very small when compared to the latest model (500GB), and note that the disk-drive probably is approaching 10 years old -- doomed to "fail" soon. Replace it, and add an external-SATA "Expander" to add another 1000GB of storage of recordings.

DCT6412 DVR Box

When that happens its most likley you had a power outage and the box reset.  Well kinda reset but not all the way.  You can unplug the power and wait about 10sec and plug it back in and wait a few min to a few hours, and If that doesn't work get a new box.

No you cannot record on to your pvr in HD, and yes you will have to wait for an HD-pvr unit. This is because of the HDCP agreements.
