The limit switch that detects that the lid is closed is probably defective. You've already probably experienced how the agitator would stop if the lid was opened when the machine was working properly--same thing.

    That was it, thanks. We replaced the lid switch and it's working.

SOURCE: Filled with water, will not drain or agitate,

Agitator dogs, I go through a set every 2 months. It has gotten so I can replace them in 3 minutes.

Washer hums

Under the tub is a round coupling that wears out. This needs to be replaced. When the washer is over loaded it puts to much stress on this coupling and wears it out. You have to take out the drum to replace it. As for it not filling, check the water vavles that supply the washer they may have been turned off

Whirlpool washer humming!

If you open the lid, does the humming stop? If so that means your lid switch is good, the hum is from you motor, which means your transmission is messed up. You need a service call.
