Motion Light doesn't work on switch

The motion detector will only work when the dimmer switch is set to full on ...any other position and it will not receive the correct voltage to operate correctly...

What is the point of having a motion trigger on it then? Wire it direct to the switch or remove the sensing unit and turn it on at dusk and off at dawn using a timer.

Depends on the model of the detector, but wireless motions are not supposed to light up; if they light up they have been put into test mode, either by opening the tamper switch, removing and reinserting the battery, or by positioning an internal jumper to the test position. If the motion is a 5890(PI), remove the batteries and short the empty battery sockets for about 30 seconds to reset the low battery circuit, then reinsert the batteries and close the cover, making sure the tamper switch is properly closed. Other motions don't need this reset procedure, but do need all tamper switches closed. Ensure no one is moving near the motion and reset the keypad by entering your code plus Off (just like coming home). If everything is right and all other devices closed the ready light should come on.

One of the switches needs to be a 4-way then the PIR will act as any other switch. The downfall is if the lights are on and motion is sensed they will turn off.

My preference is to connect the contacts of the security device across the travelers of the three way circuit. The travelers are probably the red and black in the three conductor cable. When motion is detected the lights will turn on regardless of the settings of the three way switches then after timeout they will turn off. If they are turned on with one of the three way switches nothing will happen when the motion detector turns on except you cannot turn the lights off until the security device has turned off.

Outdoor lights will only come on when motion is detected, otherwise light bulb does not come on. So the indoor wall switch does not work as override since the motion sensor takes over as the sole switch.

Other solutions include adding separate motion sensor light nearby and keep porch light so you can turn on-off when desired.
Another option is to add photocell to outdoor light so it turns on automatically at dusk.

Another option is to replace indoor wall switch with with dawn-dusk timer, that can also be used as ordinary on-off switch so you can turn porch light on-off when desired. Timer such as Intermatic ST01C offers simple 2-wire connection.:

many motion sensor do not work with fluro tubes as stated on the fitting instructions as it has the same affect as you turning the switch on and and on to change from auto to manual operation
the problem comes from the ballast and the starter operation

Instructions do not show 1 motion sensor and 1 ordinary 3-way switch.

The motion sensor unit shorted to due to rainwater infiltration, if its like the last half-dozen motion sensor units I opened up. Take the unit down, open up the sensor unit head, and if its got moisture inside, you know why it quit. If not moisture, then they sometimes do what all electronic devices eventually do, they fail due to 1 of the components reaching its failure - every sensor has an MTBF
(mean time between failure).

On most motion sensor lights if you turn the switch on, then off and on quickly, they will stay on till you turn them back off. Leave it off for at least 10 seconds and turn it back on to go back to the motion sensor.

Hi, You don't say what the make or model is, so I will give you the best advice I can. Most motion sensor lights today have a switch or two on them for "on", "test" and then some time like 3 minutes, or 5 minutes. The switch is tiny so it or they are easy to overlook. The "on" position will keep the light on all of the time. The test position does different things on different models but you will want one of the time settings.
