I just had a motion light installed in my back yard. The light switch is in the on position and the light works, but there is no way for me to flip the light on to stay on (like if we're in the backyard in the evening...we have to keep walking over to activate the motion sensor)
It sounds like you may have the switch and the motion sensor wired is series , in which case the motion sensor will only function if the switch is in the on position and give you no way to keep the light in a constant on position. if you where to wire the sensor in parallel with the switch the switch would act as a bypass to the sensor , which sounds to me like what you are trying to achieve .
Try turning the switch on and off and back on again this usually will bypass the motion detector. when you are finished you can turn the switch off for a few seconds and back on and it will resume its normal function
