Without seeing it I can't be sure of your exact problem. But on mine, the washer under the nut has tabs I had to bend down to enable the nut to come off. Then I had to use snap ring pliers to take the snap ring out. Be careful here, as the rings can be under a lot of pressure and they can really fly, so use safety goggles. On that mower deck I was able to hold the blade in place with a piece of 2x4 stuck in the deck, so I was able to loosen the nut with a breaker bar. On my other deck the blade turned, so I had to use a large pipe wrench to hold the shaft on the bottom while I loosened the nut on top. Unless yours is really different, the whole spindle assembly comes out by removing 4 small bolts.nuts. This makes it a lot easier to work out in the open.

You are talking about a three point hitch ... they can be tricky. Might be worth the time to go to the farm supply store in your community and take a look at how it should be hooked up and operated. It is dangerous to operate this device with out some training.
