Greetings,
This is a relatively easy fix for you. What I've done for you is take pictures of this repair on your type of vacuum to make it as easy as possible. I will explain step by step what you need to do in order to fix the switch on your Hoover.
What you'll need to do this repair:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Needle Nose Plyers
- Hoover Windtunnel Switch
Step 1. Turn the vacuum cleaner so that the back is facing you. Remove the two screws at the top of the vacuum that are holding the handle on the machine. Please see the picture below of the two highlighted screws that need to be removed;
Step 2. After these two screws have been removed, simply slide the handle backwards, and remove it completely from the vacuum and set it aside. You now can see the on/off switch, but you can't easily change it from here, you'll need to complete several other steps before you may remove the switch. Here's what the vacuum should look like after removing the handle:
Step 3. After removing the handle from the vacuum, turn the machine around so the front of it is facing you. Open the bag housing and set the bag door aside. Also remove any attachments that are on-board in the tool storage bin, this model has a hand-held turbo brush stored here. After removing both of these parts, you'll need to unscrew 3 screws that holds the tool caddy onto the vacuum cleaner. I have circled the area where these 3 screws are located:
Step 4. After removing these three screws, pull the tool caddy off of the vacuum by pulling straight forward by using the tool caddy lid. You'll now have access to both the front and the back sides of the switch. Use your needle nose plyers to remove the two wires that are attached to the switch. Be careful when pulling these wires off because if you pull too hard, then it will break the switch terminal off inside of the wire. Most models have the wire that has a plastic covering over the end of it on the top, and the metal terminal is connected on the bottom. The two lead wires that need to be removed are highlighted:
Step 5. After the wires have been removed from the switch, turn the vacuum back around so that the back of the machine is facing you. Simply use your flat head screwdriver to pry the switch off. You may push on the front side of the switch where the wires connect to it in order to give a space so that you can get a screw driver behind it. Here's how it should look:
Step 6. Once the old switch has been removed, simply push the new switch into the open hole. Important: Make sure that the Off setting of the switch is at the bottom, and the part of the switch that says on is on the top, otherwise the switch will be reversed. Re-attach the wires to the switch, with the wire that has the plastic covering on top, and the metal wire terminal on the bottom. The only tricky part of reassembling is when you put the handle assembly back on the vacuum. As you can see, there is a metal cable below the switch. This metal cable controls the self-propelled mechanism. If you look at the handle assembly, you'll see where the self propelled cable sits inside. The easiest way to line these up is to pull the cable up to the top, and then line up the rod inside of the handle that the cable goes in, and slide the handle back on the vacuum.

Hello,
I'd be happy to walk you through this repair. Unfortunately this is a very common problem with the Hoover SteamVacs.
Here's what you'll need to complete this repair:
- Hoover Turbine Assembly For Model F5866-900 Part # 43191001 or 90001354
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Flat Head Screwdriver
Step 1. Remove both the clean solution, and the dirty solution tanks from the machine, and press the handle release pedal so that the handle is laying down flat:
Step 2. With a flat head screwdriver, pry off the rotating brush speed indicator knob:
Step 3. Unscrew the silver screw that's at the very top of the see thru suction port where the dirty solution tank rests.
Step 4. Turn the SteamVac upside down so that the brushes are facing upwards. There are four clips that hold these brushes in place. You'll need to remove the brushes from the machine by squeezing the four tabs while pulling upwards at the same time. The picture actually only shows the two tabs on the right hand side being squeezed, but the tabs on the left hand side are in the exact same location:
Step 5. Once you've removed the brush block from the machine, there are 4 screws on the bottom that need to be removed. Keep the two silver screws on the very corner in place, you won't need to remove these. Remove the four screws that I've highlighted in red:
Step 6. Turn the machine back over right side up, so that the brushes are on the bottom. There are two clips that hold the top housing in place. Insert your flat head screwdriver in between the top and lower housing in the rear of the machine close to the rear wheels, and pry upwards to unclip these clips on both the left and right sides, then remove the top motor housing from the machine.
Step 7. You'll now have complete access to the turbine. Remove the two silver screws in the front of the unit that hold the turbine in place, as well as remove the front hose from the turbine:
Step 8. Once you have removed the two screws you'll be able to lift the turbine up. There's a second hose in the rear of the turbine that you'll also need to remove before you can remove the turbine completely. After you've removed the hose, take the turbine out of the machine. You'll notice to the immediate left of the turbine other hoses that connect to a black circular part. This is actually the pump that sprays the water on the floor. If you ever have the problem where the clean water solution will not spray, it's a good possibility that this part needs to be replaced.
Simply install the new turbine, reattached the hoses and two front screws. When you're putting the top motor housing back on the unit, make sure that the brush speed selector knob that's on the right side of the turbine fits through the **** in the top motor housing. Also before tighting the two screws that that hold the top housing in in front of the brushes, there's two clips. You'll need to snap the top motor housing behind these two clips. Simply push front of the motor housing until you hear it snap into place.
