SOURCE: black screen

hi,
do you see any error or does it go blank after you see the windows logo,
if it goes blank after you see the windows logo, that means that there has been software misconfiguration at the level of windows operating system, restart your system using the power button and wehn you see the asus logo at start start tapping F8 key, it will lead you to a menu that will say boot into safe mode, select safe mode and enter, see if you are able to boot into safe mode, if you are then what we can do is restore your system back to a previous date
to do that in safe mode follow the following instructions

Caution: After a system restore the configurations/software that are done after the restore point will be lost

for system restore
click on start button > go to run > in there type in without quotes
"%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe"

system restore window will open

  1. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  2. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list the dat eon which your computer was working, click a restore point list, and then click Next.
Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  3. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  4. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
  5. Click OK.

Hello.

Your problem certainly could be a motherboard issue, but try some other steps, first.

Connect an external monitor to see if your display is a problem.

Your fan could be full of dust or faulty. Disconnect all cables and remove the bottom cover. With a can of compressed air, blow the dust from the fan. Leave the cover off and reconnect the power cable. Power on and see if the fan moves. If it does not move, the fan could be replaced by removing some screws and disconnecting a cable or two. Not difficult, but only do if you are comfortable.

Other suggestions are heatsink paste. But, a professional should do that for you.

Hope this helps.

The screen goes very dark within a minute after booting up = I can just barely see the menu page

When you say screen goes very dark when it booted to windows so it means that when you turned on the laptop when the dell logo flashes the screen was fine? if thats the case could you please try this. after turning on the laptop you will see the dell logo flashes immediately keep tapping on F2 and then it will show you the BIOS setup utility, please check if in BIOS setup display goes dark as well. If yes then try this, after turning on the computer when dell logo flashes keep tapping on F12 to boot menu then select utility partition to run the diagnostics. Please run test on the LCD check if display goes black when running the LCD test. Then try this when you sees the dell logo keep tapping on F8 to boot in safe mode check if in safe mode display goes very dark. Try this too, boot in F8 then select last known good configuration check if the settings on your display will be fix. If you can boot to safe mode no problem then uninstall the display or video driver. then restart computer.
You can also try to connect an external monitor if you have one just try to isolate if issue is on the LCD or the video card. If the display is dark as well in external monitor then video card needs to be reseated if fails then replaced. In situation like this most video cards is integrated to the motherboards. So replace motherboard.
