How can I fix a data error on my Toshiba 593400-D HDD?

no, first run smart tests
if the C6 parameter, is above 0 that means the HDD is bad
the chkdsk , will only fail fail forever, with a bad hdd.
windows, can not repair disks, (hide some errors yes for a while)
no PC stated.
NO OS stated.
just some vague data error.

in real shop we run full linux boot demo disk
the run diskcheck and this reports SMART status
using linux the parameter is 198. (must be zero)
as seen here.
uses a bad HDD is like bucket full of holes.
and you using chewing gum as fix (chkdisk /f)

if the PC still runs, you never said.
run chrystaldisk info. (free), if not run linux boot disk.(or USB stick)

How do I start a manual backup with a Toshiba model 593400-A Convio 500GB drive?

Your ANSWER depends on your operating system?

FREE BACKUP PROGRAM CALLED: "EaseUS Todo Backup" takes ALL of the hard work and mystery out of backups! Find it here:
SO easy they are showing a GIRL doing it!

EaseUS Todo Backup Free

Diane, EXTERNAL USB 3.0 (backup) hard drives (at 500GB) are extremely reasonable now and MAY be your best bet for reliable and EASY backups! See eBay ~ not Amazon.

Heck since you won't be using that drive often
you can consider a USED External Hard 500GB drive (USB 3.0) for about $20! Diane, THAT is VERY reasonable "insurance".

Now be careful and READ the fine print! Be SURE you are NOT buying a case/enclosure ONLY!

Also know that many newer USB Drives have software that is often included.

How do I start a manual backup with a Toshiba Convio 500GB HDD? Model number is 593400-A.

windows OS? what?
manual backup?
what are you doing? backing up data?

we can back up vast ways today.
1: to external HDD, (bingo?)
2: to DVD burner
3: to a home server
4: to the cloud or to a private FTP server (i use latter)
5: USB stick.

all you do is drag and drop files.
I looked up your model, and is an external drive."portable"
so plug it in, see it in program manager,? you must see it or its dead.
is this the first time using this device,? unstated.
if it works on other PC, then it works.
it may not on this PC if your USB ports are weak. no PC stated.
try all USB ports yet?
does it show up in disk manager, ? it must
if you have USB errors in device manager, then we fix this first.
all drivers for USB must be good on this PC
the pc must be connected to the internet or PnP will be 1/2 dead.

when you plug in any USB device, the PC goes, (bingdong) for USB going online, and then shows up in diskmanagers.
if the drive is new, you must assign drive letter to the disk in disk manager, then it needs to be formatted, if virgin disk.
ok?

After i back up my folders, the toshiba says the folder is empty. when i right-click->properties the folder, it says that there are several gigs worth in the folder. how come i can't see any of my backed...

There's a possibility that the files are hidden. go on the folder, hit alt, then on the toolbar, pick tools -> folder options. Next, go to 'view' tab and look for "hidden files and folders" and make sure you select "show hidden files ...." Hope that helps!

I have toshiba 250 gb HDDR250E03X i am unable to write a data of 4 gb or more(single file of 4 gb or more)..?

Hi this is a file system issue. It is probably formatted in fat32, which does not support files above 4 gigs.
To solve this problem you'll need to reformat it (my computer => right click on the drive => format), using ntfs file system (under file system select ntfs).
Note:
THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING FROM YOUR DRIVE!
So back up everything before proceeding.
After it is done you will be able to copy files of any size onto it.

Alternative solution: download winrar and split your files into chunks smaller than 4 gigs.

Good luck!

Restore backup files

You should have everything saved ("backed up") on dvds now. Your next step is to pop in the restore discs that came with the computer unless you have a vista machine that isn't a toshiba or dell because vista machines (like HP) makes you create your own.

pop in your disc, boot to cd, and press next a few times... it will delete everything and get the pc back to the first day you bought it.
