Slowness of the Laptop

I have a HP nx6110 series laptop. The configuration of the same is 40GB HDD and 256MB RAM with 1.6 GHz processor.
Now a days, its so slow that i have stoped using it. It is running on licensed version of XP though.
Just wanted to know, is it that the XP updates are too big for my 256MB RAM to handle? Should i increase the RAM size? or is it redundant and should be scrapped off?

    I have an hp compaq nx6110 (1.6GHz, Intel Pentium M 1766 MHz, only 14 GB used and 37 GB free on hard drive). It's taking at least 4 minutes to boot up on AC power and running slow even after installing the maximum ram (2 GB) and running Advanced System Optimizer software. I cleaned up and defragged and cleaned the hard drive and registry, I have 77% of my ram free when operating a normal load. Is the Front Bus speed the issue? Registry problem? Also the audio hickups slightly when Windows start up theme plays and when CD plays. Is there anything I can do to speed this thing up?

The laptop is not redundant. Go to Crucial and go through their memory scan. XP can run on 256mb ram but not well. You will get more years out of the computer with more ram installed.

First you need to be clear that dual core is the family of Pentium series. so there is no processor called Pentium.............. now regarding your question i would suggest you do not go for dual core... Take core 2 duo or I3 /I5/I7 series of processor..............

I think you're confusing RAM (memory) with hard disk space (storage). Installing more RAM makes your computer run faster. More hard disk space gives you more room to store stuff. Which would you like to do?

Processor upgrade
Your CPU is tied into your motherboard. Only CPUs that are compatible with your motherboard will work. You can get your motherboard model from start>programs>system tools>system information. Once you have the model # then you can start searching for the CPU options. Good Luck.
