Re: my dm-20 seem to have some recorded in its memory
More than likely you would need to format the device. This will clear all data that has been previously recorded. In your menu there is a format option. Run that and the memory would then be reset.

I have had the same problem one of the people told me to charge it for 16 hrs first then record yet I have little luck I'm still looking to see if I can get it to work I'm testing it at the moment email me if you can help or need my results on [email protected]
Before you mess around I would suggest that you get an audio recorder, hook it up to the Sony speaker and record for posterity the family keepsakes. Then ...............
you sould go to the compney frenchise and tell them the problem.they will replace the screen.other wise u should bay a screen if same model and repalce it care full by your self
The voice recorder is in read only status - you will need to format the device to remove the lock (read only). Go to menu - to submenu and then run the format option. make sure all files have been downloaded as once device is formatted all files will be permanently deleted
Check the batteries contact especially at the battery cover. It may happened rusty if you leave the battery for a long time when the recorder not in use.
When I turn on the recorder It says "memory trouble", even after I formatted both the music and voice folders. Sometimes the "Memory trouble" shows while I record Physiology class,Resulting in stopping the recording.
I would be very grateful for any assistance concerning this.
Thank You
Jonathan

To reset the settings back to English: 1. Set the DM-20 to Voice mode using the blue switch on the back voice recorder. 2. Remove the DM-20 from Hold using the gray switch on the back of the voice recorder. 3. Press and hold the DISPLAY/MENU button on the front of the DM-20 for at least 3 seconds. The menu list is displayed. 4. Click the REWIND button six times to highlight the Format menu item. 5. Click the PLAY button to select the Format menu item. A message will be displayed with Cancel and Start options. 6. Click the REWIND button once to highlight Start. 7. Click the PLAY to select Start. A message stating that the data will be cleared will display briefly. Then a message asking if you are sure will be displayed. 8. Click the REWIND button once to highlight the Start menu item to continue with the format. 9. Click the PLAY select the Start menu item and begin the format. The format progress bar will appear. When it is complete the menu items will be in the English language.
I received this response from the european Olypus support group :-
Turn recorder on - Press STOP, FOLDER and MENU buttons and hold all of
them for about 3 seconds or until display changes - then press PLAY
button and that resets the recorder back to English.
