Surfboard sbg6580 signal loss in certain rooms

I just purchased the Motorola SURFboard 6580 and it has boosted my wifi SIGNIFICANTLY, I couldn't believe it, HOWEVER, in certain areas of my house where I always had a fine connection, I completely lose all internet signal. Why would I be going from download speeds of 30mbps and step 3 inches to my right to a total deadzone with the SURFboard while my old cheap modem and router gave consistent 10mbps download speeds in all areas... no booster... no interference known or issues raised before... on same computers so no changes there.... ideas???

If I walk back the 3 steps the wireless connection comes right back, so the wireless itself around the house doesn't go out, so one person in the other room on their laptop or iPad etc are fine, but certain areas drop from 30 to 0 within a 3 inch span instantly... it just seems certain areas have become deadzones (like NYC for AT&T wireless).... but I have never had that issue with other cheap 20 dollar routers etc... so its just strange that this happens with a "better quality" product....

SOURCE: cable modem + dlink router

Your modem needs to be rebooted in order for your router to pull an IP from the modem. To do this, look for a little hole in the back of your modem and use a pen to push the button. Wait for the reboot to finish and then try again in about 20 seconds.

SOURCE: Arris Modem won't work with Airport Express

Not sure how helpful this will be, as I'm running a different piece of gear, plus it requires both troubleshooting + ISP assistance.  I had a similar problem with my AirPort Extreme: AirPort Extreme saw the Arris, iBook saw the AirPort Extreme, but no internet connectivity.

  1. In my case, I needed to set the AirPort to DHCP in the AirPort Utility application.
  2. Power down the AirPort Extreme
  3. Power down the Arris. You achieve this by unplugging the Arris *and* removing the back-up battery.
  4. Wait a few moments.
  5. Insert the battery into the Arris.
  6. Plug in the Arris power supply.
  7. Wait for the Arris to go through the restart protocol; when all the lights on the front panel are solid green, the start-up is complete.
  8. Power up the AirPort Extreme; wait for the front panel light to go solid green.
As I was doing this, I had my ISP on the phone that confirmed complete connectivity of the signal path and ensured that I was online.  While the Arris was powered down, my ISP also sent a "message" to the Arris; I don't know if this was a software update or what.  I completed the AirPort set-uo through the Utility application, the AirPort restarted, and I was online.
Hope this helps.

I have a Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 modem. I want to use the wireless for my DS lite but it says that I need an WEP key, but I don't know how to enable it. Help!

Your wireless is set up with a password. You need to get that password before you can connect any more devices. From a computer that can connect to the internet go to 192.168.0.1. Then type admin for the username and motorola for the password. I believe from there you click Wireless then click Primary Network. You should see your wireless network name and password from there. I'm getting this from the modems manual here: http://www.midcocomm.com/_files/files/SBG6580.pdf

How do I setup to use the dual band feature on the motorola surfboard gateway SBG6580? We want to set it up to use both for different applications. Thanks

Contact your Internet Service Provider. Since you will be connecting your modem to their network, you need to follow their setup instructions, to ensure that it functions correctly.

Low signal strength, only -89db.

Telephone your Internet Service Provider -- they can "remotely" connect to your cable-modem, and verify the settings, and can boost the signal. After all, you're paying them $$$$ per month; this month, make them "earn" their money from your wallet.
