Frigidaire Freezer 20.3 Cu. Ft. Frost Free Upright Freezer, AFFU2066D Logo

I have a frigidaire freezer model #ffu20f9gw3 and it has started to not be frost free meaning there is an area on the back bottom wall that seems to be freezing over and so the water accumulates on the bottom floor & freezes there.I've looked under the freezer and there isn't a drain tube or a pan. So not sure what is wrong, have never had this problem in 12 years until last month. We bought it new and there never was a tube or pan. Any help--ideas ??

Check your unit for any blocked airways or vents - also check the door for any gaps or damages/breaks in the door seal. Ice indicates an air leak - or faulty defrost cycle.

Make sure that the fridge is level. If the drain pitch is not sufficient, this will happen. The solution is cheap too!

Without any additional info, there are a lot of possibilities:
1. Condenser coil (underneath unit) is dirty and clogged.
2. Compressor is failing. (need A/C tech)
3. Metering device is clogged. (need A/C tech)
4. Refrigerant charge is low. (need A/C tech)
5. Door seal is broken (frost will form around door).
6. Defrost heaters are stuck on (replace defrost timer located underneath unit at front).
7. Condenser fan has failed (underneath freezer on back).
8. Evaporator fan (inside fan) has failed (ice will form on cooling coil).

This should get you started...

SOURCE: My Frigidaire upright freezer is only 4 years old & isn't working

freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit

Testimonial: "Thanks so much for your advice. Freezer seems to be working after being thoroughly thawed. Fingers are crossed."

The number on the door says 8. and the coldest number it says is 7. What is the 8. mean?

Hello Leigh, thank you for your post!

I understand you are seeking information on what the number eight means on your Frigidaire freezer. May I please have the model number? The serial tag, which lists your model number, is typically located inside the cabinet, on the left side wall. With this information I can better address the issue at hand. Thank you!

I have had the same problem with my frigidaire/electrolux upright freezer... I am researching to see if there is a pattern. Once or twice a year for the past few years, the freezer defrosted itself. I found the outside of the unit to be VERY hot to the touch around the time that this occurred.
We typically unplug it for a chunk of time when this happens and then replug it. It has always begun working again.
Sadly, we have lost many groceries and have had to clean many bloody meat messes as a result of this. ANYONE buying this freezer should save their receipt... That way, they can return it or have it repaired when it fails. I hate to think of sending all of these failing monstrosities to the landfill... =(

Temperature Alarm

Can you look behind the food and shelves at the back wall near the bottom, if there is a frost build up on the back wall we have an issue with the defrost system, this would cause poor air flow and loss of cooling. I do not have your model number but I am assuming since it is a frost free unit it has an internal fan. If so is the fan running inside, can you feel air out the vent in the top? If not your fan motor may have gone out. The next thing to check is feel the side walls of the freezer, they should be warm. If they are not the compressor may not be running. Let me know the results of these questions and we can go from there.

1999 Frigidaire Refrigerator

Check rear wall of freezer by feel for frost. Heavy, even frost indicates likely problem in the defrost system. Unplug unit. Defrost heater (in freezer behind rear wall panel), defrost thermostat (same area-must be checked at freezer temperature) or Defrost timer-located lower back outside of unit. Near compressor. Do continuity test on heater and defrost thermostat and if they show continuity (good), replace defrost timer. If not, replace the one that tests bad.

Defrost coils fully. Reassemble.

Please let me know if I have helped with comments and rating.

Refrigerator will work about 7-10 days after being defrosted until thick frost builds up again cutting off air flow to both compartments

if the compressor is running, the fan beside the compressor and the fan in the freezer should both be running, dirty coils can cause a problem. frost buildup on back of freezer wall is indicative of defrost problem.

GE upright freezer

If this is a frost free model the fan could be bad. If not frost free it is probably low on freon. I don't recomment fixing this as you can never really trust the freezer again. Most of the time the leak can't be found and adding freon is only a temp solution.
