Candy CSC 1745WE fridge freezer just started making a noise like the cooling fan is catching on something. This noise stops when you put pressure on fridge or freezer doors. Any ideas, many thanks.

If the defrost is not working then ice could be forming inside the unit. If that's the case then it will get worse as more ice forms and the unit eventually wont cool or will cool very little. Sometimes a panel or the fan blade isn't adjusted right and it hits something making noises. In the case you would have to pull the covers off inside the freezer .

Why is Ice Forming on my Heat Pump

Many people have heat pumps and never realize that ice can form on the outdoor unit. Some have seen ice on their heat pumps but do not know how much is too much until they have a problem with not enough heat. Still others have a backup heat source and never know that they have a problem.

First off lets establish that heat pumps will form ice on the outdoor unit, usually whenever the outdoor temperatures go below about 40 degrees F. This threshold for ice depends a lot on the humidity of the air outside. If it is raining or snowing, the ice will form much more readily and rapidly. It is normal for ice to form on the outdoor unit because it is the cold side of the system when it is running in the heating mode. Because of this cooling, if the outdoor temperature is near or below freezing and there is moisture in the air, it will condense and freeze on the unit.

To keep the ice from building up to the point where it stops all the air flow, the outdoor unit will have a defrost timer board. This operates in conjunction with a sensor. Every 30 – 90 minutes the board will check the sensor. If the sensor tells the board that ice has formed on the coil it will then change the unit over from heating to cooling. This will make the outdoor unit the hot side for a short time to melt away the ice. While it does this, the unit will also energize the back up heat which is often an electric coil or a furnace. This will keep the inside air from blowing cold while the unit is defrosting.
When the sensor feels the coil temperature at about 50 degrees F it will then tell the board to return to the regular heating and switch the coils around again.

If this process fails to work for some reason the outdoor coil will become a big block of ice and look something like this.

When your outdoor coil becomes totally frozen over it stops all the air flow through the coil and stops the heating process. In extreme case it can be very difficult and becomes a very long process to defrost the coil. You need to practice a lot of patience and care when defrosting a badly frozen coil. A torch or preferably a heat gun (hair dryer) can be used to speed up the defrost process. If it continues to occur the timer needs to be set to defrost more often or either the timer or the sensor has gone bad.

What is causing water accumulation in bottom freezer

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You have one of two problems:

1.) Frozen Drain:
You unit goes through a defrost model every 8-10 hours. At this time everything shuts down with the exception of the unit lights. Then, your defrost heater turns on for 20-30 minutes to defrost your cooling (Evaporator) coils. If you have a frozen drain the condensate has no where to go except on the bottom of your freezer. This is a common problem.
A trained technician would pull the back wall out of your freezer, access your drain, clear the drain and put a heat sink in the drain to prevent this from happing in the future. This is a major task even for a technician. This will cost you about $350.00.
You can try unplugging your unit for 24 hours and let the ice melt.

2.) Refrigerant Restriction:
In the upper right had corner of your cooling (evaporator) coil is a small 1/16" diameter tube with a inside diameter about the size of a small needle. This is where it is common for refrigerant flow to get blocked. This is where the high pressure liquid refrigerant turns to vapor. If there is a blockage, a large block of ice forms and drips water into the bottom of the freezer. Also, your cooling coils will not have a full frost pattern. You will get cooling and after a month or a couple of months gradually no cooling.

A repair of this nature is about $500.00 +.

Rule of thumb: "If the repair cost is 1/3 or more of the original cost of the unit - buy new."

Here is what I suggest; Unplug your unit for 24 hours. If after 1-2 weeks the water problem reoccurs. Purchase a new unit. Go to a Sears Outlet Store. Purchase a scratched unit. Save $400.00. The unit comes with a full one year warrantee.

If you decide to go with the repair, go into the Sears Home Services site and print out a 10% coupon on services.

Looking at a H84-27 how can you tell if its air cooled or if its water cooled?

Air cooled units will have refrigeration condensers, ie: the fins for air to pass over. Water cooled units have water hook ups and black coils inside.

Ice forming on inside of indoor unit...not cooling properly

Hello, ice will form either due to low airflow such as a dirty filter, evaporator coil, blower wheel. Or due to a low refrigerant charge.

I have a carrier air conditioner model 38CKC024340 it cool the house sometimes, then a block of ice will form on the unit outside and it stops cooling, what could be the problem

Have you changed the air filter?

The 2 main reasons for frozen units in cooling mode 1. Not enough air flow. 2. Low on refrigerant.

You can fix #1.
#2 will require a service call.

Ice maker not making ice

Water solenoid to ice maker not working. Check with ohm meter..should NOT read open
Water line to Ice maker frozen solid. Look at water inlet to ice maker....is ice present in line?
Evaporator coils frozen over with ice. Will cause water line to freeze and unit will slowly thaw.
Try unplugging the unit for several hours and see if it starts to cool normally again. If it cools normally then check heater element and Defrost Thermostat.

Fridgedaire Elite frost proof fridge part not cooling, Freezer sems fine

If the frozen side is colder than normal and some extra frost is forming where the fan blows, and there is ice in the bottom of freezer compartment, and the cool side is not cool enough, their is a good possability the defrosting unit is not removing all the frost and ice . the defrosting unit has a timer (usually near thermostat) that turns off the cooling fan and compressor and turns on a small heater around the evaporator ( about 20 minutes every 2 days) (evaporaror is cold heat exchanger coil inside the back wall behind a cover near the recirculating fan0, the fan circulates air to both compartments through two small openings, if these openeing are closed by ice buildup cool air can not circulate to the cool side. cure 1. remove all food and leave fridge off for 24 hours with doors open (take precautions to ensure children can't get locked in side and suffocate, if you get a qt of water in bottom of unit (may leak on floor) ice buildup that the defrost heater can not remove melted and was your problem . turn frig on replace food on unit. cure 2. turn frig off, remove food from both sides, remove shelves that block access to evaporator, remove cover over evaporator if you see the evaporator coils free of ice look at openings (2) to other side, one may be blocked with ice the other with frost, carefully melt ice with hair dryer.
If the evaporator coil is solid ice heater or timer or fan has failed. good luck
