Canon PowerShot SD780 - Salt water damage

Camera dropped from my pocket into the ocean... it fell between a bunch of boulders and about 7 feet down. We dove down and had it out between 10 and 15 min after it fell. Let it sit in white rice for 1.5 days then: Battery still works great along with the memory card. When the battery is put into the camera the only thing that happens is the bright red light on the front of camera turns on. I'm not hopeful but any suggestions would be great. I'm planning on taking it apart and cleaning it all but other then that unsure on what to do. Thanks!

Taking it apart and cleaning it is not going to fix this. White rice may remove excess moisture, but does nothing for the salt. You can't clean corrosion that has already begun. As the camera is not currently working, the damage has already been done.

I just repaired my Canon G2 with the same symptom.  The internal PCB that you plug the external AC adapter is defective.  The numbers on the board are:

Take a picture with the camera and download it. If the pictures also shows up white then this probably is a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

SOURCE: Memory card error message

Cards are coming in different formats and it might be possible that you brought a card which is not suitable or functional with your camera. The other reason could be that we are having options to lock our memory card in digital camera and you might have taken out your earlier card without unlocking it. The system might be broken from inside and this could be a reason that you are still getting a message that memory card is locked. It seems possible based on problem you are sharing.

Dropped Canon PowerShot into salt water

You're not going to like my answer. Salt water is very corrosive. Once it gets into a camera, even if you allow the moisture to dry out, will continue to corrode the camera and lens elements. Repair shops will not even touch a camera that has been dropped in salt water.

After a computer crash I've lost the driver for Canon Powershot SD780. Where can I download it?

You can download Canon software from
www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_sd_series/powershot_sd780_is

You might want to consider NOT using a driver. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Canon ZoomBrowser or any other photo cataloging program.

It was dropped in ocean more than a week ago . Now not turning on. What can be done to fix it?

Even if you dried it properly (burying it in a bowl of dry rice for a week before even trying to turn it on), salt water is very corrosive and continues to do damage for weeks and months. It also dries to a salty film on the lens elements. Dropping a camera into salt water is usually a death sentence for a camera. Even if you could find someone willing to repair it, the cost would be astronomical since everything except the case would have to be replaced.

DROPPED CANON POWERSHOT SX10 IS IN SALT WATER (NOT SUBMERGED). WILL NOT WORK. ALLOWED TO DRY OUT SEVERAL HOURS, INSERTED SD CARD AND BATTERIES. DOES NOT TURN ON.

First of all, it would take days, not hours to dry out. Turning it on too soon can fry the circuits. But worse than that, salt water is extremely bad for a camera. Most places won't even repair it.

Powershot dunked in salt water... is there any hope?

I'm sorry but short of running the camera over with a bulldozer, dunking in salt water must rank a close second to the absolutely worst thing that you could do to a camera. The camera may look fine on the outside, but many electrical shorts and building corrosion are happening out of sight inside. Would suggest considering a new, or even previously owned, Canon camera.
