Won't back up when there is a slight resistance such as being on grass. Backs up on a solid service, but very slow.
Under ideal conditons this scooter will go one half speed in reverse. On rough terrain it may be slightly slower. I am assuming that the speed control is all the way up (clockwise), the batteries are fully charged and in good condition. If all of these are true you may have a worn throttle potentiometer. It may have bad contacts on the potentiometer in the reverse section of the control. This control can be cleaned bu the solution is only temporary. I recommend replacing the throttle pot after teload testing the batteries to verify they are good. You should make a resistance check on the throttle pot to verify it is faulty before replacing it.

SOURCE: how do you remove the back wheel of a Pride
Undo the centre wheel nut and remove along with the washer, jack the rear of the scooter off the ground then slide the wheel off the axle. If it will not remove, it will need knocking off from the inside rim. Be careful not to lose the hub key (a small piece of metal that locates in a slot in the wheel and axle) as the scooter will not drive if this is missing. To remove the trye from the rim, undo the 4 bolts that hold the two wheel halves together. When refitting the wheel, be sure to apply some grease to the axle before sliding on the wheel.

The scooter had new batteries installed when it first started with this problem. I wasn't able to open the throttle pot to clean it, it's a sealed unit. I haven't checked the resistance yet.
