Microwave seems to turn on when door latch is opened

Question for microwavesvc and others: I have a ge jw740 microwave with a push button door opener. By accident, I noticed that if I push the button halfway (before the door actually swings open), the microwave light, fan, and turntable come on suddenly. I can't tell if the microwave is actually heating, or if it's just the light, turntable, and fan that are working. I don't exactly understand the physical relationship between the door switch and the door latches, but why would this happen? As I depress the button to open the door, shouldn't all functions except for the interior light be automatically shut down? I'm just trying to find out of this is normal or not, or whether there is some malfunction that I should be concerned about (I don't want the microwave accidentally turning on in the future as the door is completely opened). Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your answer.

One last question--you mentioned that the relay must be turned on for the microwave to heat. Is there any way the relay/control board can accidentally be activated by what I did (partially depressing the door button for a few seconds), or do you need to physically set the timer and push the start button to turn on the relay/begin heating?

Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated.

Door on Advantium microwave, difficult to open. I wonder if this has something to do with handles being broken? Can I use liquid wrench to lubricate the latching mechanism? There should probably be a release button, maybe in the next design.

Intermitently turns on, the fan and light turns on when the door is opened, but the turntable does not move. Seems to work fine and this only happens occasionly. Could this be the switches?

if door is open the microwave is normal. Shut the door and the fans turn on and won't shut off until door is opened

What's happening is you are activating one door switch a little before the other, and that is causing your light, fan, and turntable to come on. The plastic parts are not perfectly rigid, so they flex a little when you press the button, and that causes the lag to be more apparent. Even if you press the door open faster and look really close, you may notice the light, fan, and turntable coming on for a split second. That's perfectly normal. The relay on the control board must also be turned on before it will actually be cooking.

The latter. You're not going to activate the relay by way of the door.

GE microwave light turns on when START buton is pushed and all the push buttons work but no heat, no sound and turn table does not turn. Any suggestions?

You might have a bad door switch, open thermal protector, or the latch mechanism is not activating the switches properly.

My JE1590 BH 02 is only 5 years old and we are having door issues. The door will not open, unless while pushing the door button you also hit the door. It seems the latch is not functioning correctly. ...

Door catches.

One of the latches may be bent/misaligned and is not lifting the other latch clear of the housing. Remove from any power source, remove the cover of the cabinet. Slacken off the clamp mechanism and ease the clamp over the guide to allow the door to open. When a new door lever is in place, the door may be easily adjusted by slackening off the screws that clamp the door catch/actuators in place whilst holding the door closed and then tightening the screws. The rear of the door may be adjusted by slackening the lower door hinge screws and adjusting as required.
I hope that helps.

Can not open the door in microwave the release button springs seem to not working can that be fixed. Have opened the release button but cannot see the problem

Do not pry the door open since there is an easier remedy which will lead you in the direction that you need to fix your problem. Take the cover off after you disconnect the power to it. Once you have taken the cover off (only a few screws) you will be able to see the two latches that hold the door closed and the link that opens both of them. You can just lift both latches at the same time and it will open. After you have done that take a good look and press in on the open door button and you will see where you have the problem of the door hanging. That button should push a linkage that pushes up on both latches at once to open the door. It is spring loaded so that it comes back down so that when you close the door it will hold the door close. You need to take the cover off the microwave so that you can pull both of the latches that hold the door closed up. When you push the button in it engages a linkage that pushes both taches up at the same time to open the door. It is springloaded and will come back down during normal operation to hold the door closed when you close it again. That area is where your problem is. By looking at what happens when you press the open door button you should be able to readily see where the problem lies in that linkage

The panel push button that opens the door is not working. Doesn't seem to be connected to anything. Door won't open.

I suspect that the lower door latch has broken off. The lower hook is actuated by the push lever and in turn lifts the upper latch that of course is not being lifted.
Disconnect from the supply.
Remove the case from the microwave and you will see how the door latch actuator works. Lift it manually and you can open the door.
Do not try and use the appliance in that condition as it will take out its mains fuse as the door switches and latches for a safety interlock.
Hope this helps.

Microwave not heating

You need to replace the whole door latch with an original part.

If it is working but not heating, then test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode.or the magnetron. If all this are fine, test the control board. If turntable is not running check also the door switch.

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.

Regarding parts, contact the seller here to purchase parts.

You can also order from MicrowaveSvc , they also provide parts.

Spacemaker II door latch problem

Most microwave ovens have catches that are shaped like hooks, these hooks catch on a fixed bolt or a raise in the frame of the oven.

The next time you get the oven open check these hooks to see if the springs are working in a strong positive manner, or if you have to push a button on the model check to see that the button releases the hooks.

Hope this helps.

GE XL1800 Micro fan won't shut off after light burned out

The problem appears, at least in part, to the door latch circuitry which cannot be serviced by the owner. If the unit is still in warranty, call GE customer care. If not, replacing the unit is your best bet. I just bought a new GE 1100 watt oven with great features for less than $100 If the door dosen't latch correctly, you could be exposed to dangerous microwave energy.
