When i start it it ask for strike f1 to boot f2 for setup and f5 for scanning
Hi,
There could be two reasons you are getting this error message .
1. The operating system has crashed and needs to be reinstalled
2. The HDD has gone bad.
Run the diagostics on the computer.
Restart your computer at the Dell logo , tap on the f12 key slowly 1-3 times.
Using your down arrow key on the keyboard highlight IDE drive diagnostics or HDD diagnostics.
Press enter .
Incase there is an error , the hard drive needs to be replaced , else the operating the system needs to be repaired or reinstalled .
Thanks for using fixya

Your optical drive might be dirty or bad. Try an official Dell disk to see if it will read it, especially a Dell drivers and Utilities disk. Also try a boot flash drive or boot floppy(since your system is a older) to get the system up. If your system comes up any of those ways, I would try a disk cleaner. If that doesn't help, then you probably have a bad cd drive. You could also look in bios setup to make sure the bios is showing your cd drive. It should list it there somewhere. Probably on the first page.

Generally an indication that the Hard Drive isn't detected
Things to check, go to BIOS F2, reset defaults and reboot, see if the HDD is seen. If it is, the battery on the motherboard is likely dead and needs replacement (Watch battery at Walmart, 3 dollars)
If the HDD doesn't detect after resetting the BIOS, then most likely a Hard Drive failure
