error 3 means the waking belt starts moving without any command. Make sure that you are not moving the belt manually before the treadmill stars .

This means you have a stuck key on your keypad. The solution most of the time is to replace the keypad. You can view this information starting on page 55 of the service manual.

You need to Calibrate the treadmill.
Open the Motor Cover , you will see the instruction for to calibrate the machine, with Wiring diagram.
Follow the steps.

I may be too late with an answer but I think getting a used star trac is a bad idea it will nickel and dime you to death even before the years up
